Wire Tach through Steering Column?

So I just finished repainting my steering column. I am about to put it back together and rewire it at the same time with a new turn signal/hazards piece. The reason I wanted to paint it in the first place is I am adding a nice billet clamp for a tachometer and didnt want bling clashing with rust, lol.

Anyway- is it worth drilling a hole in my column while its apart to run the wires for the tach through that or should I go some other route and why? Pretty much an FNG at this stuff so any help is appreciated......

Never really thought about it, but I don't see a reason it couldn't be done. I remember a channel in the column that the wires run in, just not sure of that orientation. But something that sounds feasible. Do you have the column out and all tore apart?

Nah- just have the column torn down to the top bearing- painted it while it was still bolted in. I am about to pull the old wiring out though so thought it much be a good time to pull the wires for the tach through with the new ones for the signals. I guess its that or run the wires for the tach along the outside of the column?

I say do it. Is it an automatic? If so, there is a lot of space in the steering column. The diameter of the steering shaft/shift tube barely takes up any room.

I did it with a tilt 78 column. After I ground off the automatic shift bump so it was smooth and I was ready tin fill the hole. I thought hey I'll just run the wires through here and then bolt the tach mount over the hole and it will be really trick. So I did it and covered the outside of the wires from the column hole to the back of the tach with braided stainless and it looks great. Also there is a plastic sleeve that covers the stock wires in the column that you can run the wires through
