I have a black wire coming off the ignition switch and has a spring loaded end on it. I assume it's a ground but I can't figure out where it's supposed to plug in. Any idea guys? 76 ranger stock everything.

Looks like the end of a fuse holder, check it with a meter, probably a hot wire. Where is it coming off of the ignition?

Center screw is the Accessory Hot, definitely a hot wire. Was probably run to a radio at some time. The wire coming from the accessory hot should be fused which would confirm that it is an end of a fuse holder.

What about this one. Comes out of harness on drivers side right before firewall grommet on the inside.

Ah yes dimmer switch! Thank you sir. When I took this dash out months ago I labeled every thing unless at the time I thought it was painfully obvious where it went. I guess I over estimated my memory.

You were correct. That's just the "painfully" part of the obvious.;D

Ok screw my pride, I'm asking for more help! Engine compartment, center of firewall. I have 4 connectors. 2 go to distributor and coil. One goes to transmission (c-4). Then I have this one that doesn't seem to have a mate? Wires appear red and black but as I've figured out 40 years tends to turn those colors.

Being a '76, that's very likely to be from some sort of smog control device that is no longer intact. But wait for confirmation from someone that is more familiar with those years. Maybe Viperwolf has a schematic, or jackkys or blubronco can check theirs out (they've both got '77's I think, but might be the same in this case).

Might have been just the carb anti-dieseling solenoid if your year had that, but mine was like a Black w/blue or just Blue or something like that if I remember.

I'll check my diagrams anyway, just to see if it's there.
In the meantime search out Steve83's posts here (using the advanced search function, or just look for something he's posted in the last day or so) and when you find one click on his username and hunt down his SuperMotor's web pages with the re-worked wiring diagrams in living color (and soon to be 3D even!%);) and see if you can find that color combo.

Good luck.

Unless that's just another Duraspark connector.
Does your truck have the fully functioning ignition system with the box on the wheel well and the original distributor?
Is one of the wires Red w/blue? Maybe wipe it down and look for a blue stripe.

Ok I took a wipe to the wires and a hint of a yellow tracer started to show its self on the red wire. R-Y on the diagram shows a carb valve control solenoid. I thank you for the help sir.
