I would recommend against Grundy Insurance

I had Chrome, (American Collector) and went to State Farm.

What people aren't saying is that you can get the collector rate from State Farm IF you have the rest of your cars insured with them.

I switched house, business, auto and Umbrella policies to SF and that's the only reason I left Chrome -other than the local agent was inept and I didnt trust him at all (I have several examples I won't get into).

I have had Grundy for many years. I asked questions similar to the OP when I was first quoted and find the limitations of the policy simple to comply with. Would I enjoy more freedom of use with my Bronco? Yes, yes I would. But for me to just name my value and pay a relatively small premium I expect some inconvenient limitations.

Speaking of inconvenient, we wanted to put the Bronco behind the RV and do a 6-8 week National Park tour in a year or two. I knew this would be excluded so at renewal time I asked if there was a one time rider I could buy that would allow the described use for a specific time window. Nope. Not even if I hit 4 or 5 car shows across the country. Also asked that if I purchased regular insurance for the trip if they would sell me gap insurance. So if Progressive decides my Bronco is only worth 25k Grundy would kick in the other 25k to make me whole. Also a “no.” Any of y’all have any experience getting coverage for your truck while under tow and not on the way to a car show?

State Farm has vintage car policies too. I haven't seen their restrictions thought.
Actually, the only way you can be sure how they cover is to talk to someone who has had a similar claim.
Unless, you have a drinking buddy that owns a state farm franchise I wouldn't trust them for home or auto but especially classics. Nothing but issues and this was verified by relatives that work at State farm...

I don't even think Hagerty would like that since it will be stored in a different spot each night.. Would it be on a trailer? Not enclosed?

The only thing I can think of would be to get it appraised and insure it on an agreed/guaranteed value policy with your regular insurance company. Not a stated value policy that depreciates, even though we aren't depreciating but I would not want to have that value battle with a company. Yeah no such thing as a gap policy to cover the difference in value.

Honestly might just have to risk it

I put my bronco on its own policy with state farm and have no other insurance with them.

Re upping this thread, for current 2023 info:

So what are you all paying for classic insurance, with who?

I just received an online quote from Haggerty at $850 a year, $55,000 coverage. OUCH!. Grundy quote at $399 year, same value. No accidents. Whats up with the difference?

Right now, because I was just rebuilding, now getting ready to really drive, I use USAA, who DOES NOT cover classic, its just purchase price from 1973 with inflation, IOW, $5,500 loss coverage. Thats one fender.

I just sent a question to local Haggerty rep here in Payson why the difference.

Looking on Grundy website, they seem to have improved coverage. No mile limit, coverage at hotels. Can't be used for work, can't be daily driver, must have another vehicle which is daily driver, but can be used to drive to work one month a year. Does that mean pick 30 days in a row, or 30 times a year? No other on road off road restrictions that I can see.

I switched to Hagerty this year. I don’t remember the exact numbers at the moment but I had a similar value and premium as 73azbronco. I asked specifically about the RV road trip I mentioned last year, including flat towing and parking outside. They said I’m good to go. I don’t actually plan to do the trip this year but I found myself increasingly using the Bronco near the edge of the Grundy policy limits. $500/year won’t make much difference if I was wrecked on a random Wednesday running to Trader Joes for my wife and Grundy denied the claim. If my usage drops off again I’d have no problem switching back to Grundy.

Haggerty is the elite coverage company for classics. From the 4 guys I've known for decades and all have collected they were fantastic to file a claim with. Not one issue for any of them.

Haggerty FINALLY lets you drive on a USFS road or the "sand highway" which is an ocean beach. Never used to-ever!!! Don't care what an agent might tell you - it's what the company will or will not pay a claim on that we care about.

Ask Grundy and they are quite a bit more restrictive than Haggerty. I know, I called their main office several times and compared.

I use State Farm now. Used to have Chrome

I would have to look but Chrome was close to $500, Haggerty was more than 2 1/2 times that and State Farm was the cheapest.

I told SF how much coverage I wanted & they agreed.
Guy took a pic of the speedo lol, like that speedo will stay in there for a reference! :)

We swapped house, business, cars, the works.

How are the rates at state farm and others?
I'd recommend sending a PM to @El Jefe on here - he's a Hagerty agent in Tucson and can give you a quote that might be more specific to your needs than what you get online? I'd have to go dig out the details of my coverage that I have through him, but it was less than the $$ amount you mentioned, with a slightly higher insured value.

I finally switched to Hagerty this year after they made some changes to their allowable activities with their policies, as @nvrstuk noted. @El Jefe was great to work with and was very patient with me for 4-5 years as I agonized over the decision :).

It should also be noted that Hagerty is now a "lifestyle company", instead of just an insurance company. They have the Hagerty Drivers Club, they have auctions, they spend a ton on various media ventures and they dumped a ridiculous amount of $$ into buying things like Radwood - AND they fired/laid off about 300 people in the last year in the name of trying to keep costs down (including firing their best automotive writer). I'm guessing our insurance premiums are going up to help cover all that spending....

Safeco has agreed value for me, my 66 at $40k is $423 a year, my 74 at $30k is $338/yr, my 69 at comprehensive only sitting is $131 a year for $30k. Haggerty was like $985/year for $100k in coverage with restrictions I don't have with safeco. Safeco asked for pictures of the Broncos and where I usually keep them in the garages. I have all my stuff with safeco, very few interactions for claims with them (looked at the roof on my house after storms), so its a lot of cars and boat and camper.....

I am going through American Collectors Insurance and am paying $462 a year. Agreed on value of 60K. 5,000 miles a year not restricted to shows and events. I told them I would be driving it to work, errands etc. The rep said" unlike Hagerty, we actually want you to enjoy your classic". Made me laugh.

I've heard better things on Hagerty in recent times

My state farm agent told me they are partners with Hagerty now. I haven't follow back up with yet but he want my vehicles to be his first policy working with them. I have a 67 Fairlane, 93 mustang and 73 Bronco and last thing I want to happen is them to give me $3500 if something bad happens.
