I read about this guy a few years back. Makes crazy horsepower on small engines by scaring the combustion chamber. I've thought about taking my junck smog heads and experimenting on them. Just another project that will have to wait.

Thanks 70 steve.I don't know how to link stuff. That is on the puter.Basic short version is a grove cut in the fat squish area of the head toward the plug to alter the fire pattern inside the cylinder for a more complete burn.I just came accross it myself and was curious if anybody has tried it.The ol 302 is starting to get tired and thought about trying this on it when its time ta dig into the motor.

OK, looked at that link, did a little extra google searching. Claims are way too impressive to be real. If it worked it would be done all the time by manufacturers or at least aftermarket head makers. I smell snake oil.

Now if I had some junk heads, had lots of time, good dyno access for cheap and an engine I didn't care about I may give it a shot. But flow in the head is actually a little more controlled then just adding a couple of grooves here and there. Then again I have also experimented enough to make a briggs and stratton to run on acetlene.

Personally I would never just blindly groove the quinch area of a head. There are nifty little things regarding swirl and tumble that you would completely upset. And it might be for the better, but how do you know?

I didn't read the claims, but the headline sounded a bit out of line. So I start out as a skeptic just because of huge claims. However, I'm a big fan of some snake-oils because some of them can work. Both the chemical (like oil additives) kind, and the engineering (like this guy's grooves) kind.
We talked about "dimpling" piston tips and combustion chambers years ago (like a golf ball) to help keep fuel atomized better and change the flow patterns around the spark plug and valves. And nowadays the racers are doing it to good effect. Sometimes.
Adding patters, like ridges and scallops and "threads" to the inside of a throttle-body spacer made big improvements too. Compared to just a standard smooth-bore spacer. Most of the time.

Like was said previously, the grooves are interesing for sure, but may not work as planned on every combustion chamber.
I'd sure be interested in finding out though! Give a whole new life to old heads maybe. I'd say it's worth pursuing.
Let's get the Myth-Busters in on it! Let them spend the money. On second thought, they'd probably mess up the science, then screw it up on purpose just so they could either sink it, drop it from a roof, or blow it up just to hear it go boom.
Still sounds like fun though.

If Mythbusters wanted to try it, I bet we could help them out. I would volenteer my services to swap heads on the dyno and do some work for them. In the end I would see how many RPM you could spin a junkyard engine before the rod exits the side of the block, just so they get there boom at the end;D

That really works to some point. More so on a 2 stroke. They swirl cut the cumbustion chamer areas and it dampens pinging thus preventing damage to the cylinder head. There is a picture on wetbike.net, ask Andy the site owner for the picture. An insane machinist, Leo Wicham, of LFW mfg in Stockton,CA does it. He does some super high horse boat/motorcycle engines. He is an absolute Gearhead in every sense of the word. Do you know of anybody that wore out a lathe by 28 years of age?? Leo did. The guy is incredible. BI

LFW mafg is located at:
745 South Lincoln street
Stockton, CA 95203
(209) 465-0444
website lfwmfg.com
but doesn't say much about what all he does.
Leo is the owner, he can be tough to get ahold of him, but see if he'll call you back. I would find out when he is at the shop and make a time with him. The guy is the "rainman of gears". Just a genius at what he does. BI

Thanks!
I'll probably just take my chances next time I'm in the area and stop by. I'm never quite able to set exact times myself, so it wouldn't be fair to try to make an appointment and then get sidetracked before I get there!

Dirt Donk if you do get to meet and talk with Leo you will walk away in awe. You will have met the "biggest Gearhead" ever in your life. Funny thing is, if I reacall correctly, he has a 8th grade education. BI

Well all I can say is untill I try someting myself or know it was was backed by a reputable process or person I try to reserve some skepticism while trying to remain open minded. To each his own.I mean how long and what did it take to figure out that the Earth was round.Imagine those snake oil conversations.Mythbusters I feel could screw up a good joke a lot of the time and just like to listen to themselves.I know its mainly for entertainment but To me its a good waste of materials cause they half a$$ it so much of the time. The wife and daughter likes to watch them.I don't watch it with them anymore cause I was always pointing out flaws in their processes. As far as hho and sing groves.I just would hope big oil or whom ever wouldn't kill me like Stanly Myer or wreck my stuff like Bob Boyce, etc if I chose to develop them.Sounds like this Loe fella is pretty cool.Is he open minded or the I'v be doing it that way for ? years and I aint gonna change type.

Yeah, we could probably make a living just pointing out the flaws in their methods. I"m always yelling things at the screen, but still enjoy watching it most of the time.
Hmm, a new show in the making. "Buster-Myths Revealed!" and the Auto-Myth-Check (AMC) auto-correcting software company could be the main sponsor.

Sounds like fun to me! But if he's that good, I probably won't be "walking away" at all!
Self-taught geniuses are too interesting to walk away from sometimes.
