LOL! Not that I'm smarter by any means Bax. I do have that link saved in my personal "tech" folder though. If I was smart I'd remember how to do it but pictures is much easier than memorizing these days...

I was dissatisfied with the performance of my twin sticks after performing the rail grind. Next time I will just pull the pills.

I agree with pedestrian. Even with the grind it is possible to get into a hi & low situation.
But at the same time you must shift the axels in a specific sequence just to get them both into and out of hi and low. Just pull the pills.

I did the grind today. 4 low had a a detent that has little wear. I am not to worried about it popping out. I have done the modification before and mine have worked fine with the pills in and the rails ground.

Every one I've been in had detents for 4 low.

The front shift rail has a dedicated detent for 4 low. The rear rail has more of a ramp and is held in 4 low by the front rail with the pills installed. Once you split the shift rails by twin sticking the rear rail will have a tendency to "pop" out of 4 low due to the ramp style detent. Add a little weld to the ramp on the rear rail (while you've got it out and grinding it for the true twin stick action) and sand it down to match the other detents and the detent ball will stay right where it's supposed to and not pop out.;D

Need to start using the J rails.

These are exactly the two issues I was dissatisfied about. ^^^
I have no problems with it popping out of 4 low

Need to start using the J rails.

And there's the "ramp" VW. If you look at the top rail in the pic at "LOW" and go to the corresponding "LOW" on the bottom rail you'll see the "ramp" I'm talking about for the rear shift rail Low detent. I put a dab of weld towards the neutral detent on that rail and sanded it down smooth. Essentially, matching the low detent as pictured on the top rail. Never popped outta 4 low. Didn't have it twinned before so I don't know if I'dve had the problem anyway but had heard of others that had and that was supposedly the fix. I had it out and had my welder handy so "when in Rome"...;D

I've never done a J shift but have one sitting in my parts pile that might get a set of Tera Lows someday. I've heard twin sticking a J is as easy as cutting the flags on the shift rails and bolting up the twins. Definately the easier route!

I'd say the confusion here is that you keep calling it 4low, but what you are addressing with the ramp and popping out of gear is 2 LOW.

The pills have NOTHING to do with keeping it into any range. By grinding the shift rails where the "pills" go it's suppose to keep you from putting your front and rear axles into high and low range at the same time.

The detent balls and springs run on the opposite side of the rails as the pills and are unmodified by this grinding. The detent balls keep it in the selected range. The pills have nothing to do with keeping it in any gear.

There is a company that sells New shift rails that are machined properly to prevent high AND low at the same time. I don't have a link but they are around $150 so I cheeped out.
Just remove the pills.
