Any suggestions on which kit is priced right? Bring it to a 331 or 347---how much HP will it add?

friend few years ago had a 331 stroker built, 355.8 hp at 5400rpm, 396.6 ft lbs torque at 3000rpm. cast iron 289 block, cast iron 351w heads, chinese aluminum intake, edelbrock 600 carb. later on he installed a edelbrock air gap intake and a 750 carb, ran even better!

Ain't gonna happen--got the 302:)

Spend a dollar to save a dime. Find a 351W and start there. Sell the 302

Ford spent millions of dollars (in 1960's money) when they wanted to push the small block further then 302. In order for it to work right they revised it into the 351W.

You need a much better reason to stroke a 302 other then "I already have it".
Yes there are thousands of stories of how good someones stroker runs. Think about this, just about every 302 based stroker (all the strong running ones) will be running aftermarket heads and a matched cam. Put those parts on a 351 and it runs great too, especially if you match the compression ratio to the little stroker.

I have done one 302 based stroker. Yes it was a good running little engine. Was the same HP as my 351. But the 351 was built for torque and even in the heavier bronco the 351 was more fun to drive. The torque is what makes them fun. The 302 stroker I built was only done for one reason. Space constraints. I was putting a V8 into a little Ranger pickup. The 302 was real tight fit, 351 just would not have left room for things like A/C. So I did a 330" stroker for it. That was the only reason I did a 302 based engine. The Bronco has plenty of room for a 351. Start with the correct engine (regardless of what you have now) is the proper place to start. A 351 is already bigger then a maxed out 347, and the 351 has lots of room to safely grow.

I have both, a 347 in my 66 stang and a 399 in my bronco. I think the 347 revs to quickly to do any good in a bronco, while the stroked 351 doesn't rev as quick it is still more than enough to make your bronco move. Personally I was a little nervous driving something that big that could hit 80mph that fast;D

I'am with you BN2 I think the 302 fits better in the engine compartment then the 351 and the cost of strokers have come down a lot over the years.

Before all the hate mail starts coming in I'd look into summit. You say you have the 302 already but they have a fully preped roller block that bored decked line honed, notched for $600 and they have complete 347 kits that come with balancing and other parts all ready for assembling,if I remember right all this including block comes in under 2K. Now you still need a roller cam, heads, but the 351 would needs also so those are a wash.

Now if you can find that 351 with less then 20-30K on it sence a rebuild then it blows all the above number out of the picture. I don't know about you but I'am always a day late and a dollar short on those deals. There are hidden cost in a 351 converion that add to the bottom line plus fitment problems.

When it comes to how much HP you can get the skys the limit. If you're looking for 400+ then the 351 make sence, but if 300-350HP is what you're looking for then the stroker is a good way to go.

For some reason a lot of people think a 351W is just a factory stroked 302. Far from true. I suggest you drive both motors prepared in a similar way. A 351 has huge mains and carries a lot of rotating mass. Not that it's a bad thing for torque. That's why Ford used 351W motors in trucks. But all that rotating mass really hurts the peppiness of the motor. A lot like a heavy flywheel. This is why a lot of the Mustang guys are converting to the smaller Cleveland mains in their 351Ws. Drive both the 351W and a stroked 302 and you'll see what I mean.

HP is relative while a stroker kit will add some HP and tq you really wont see big gains with the cams we tend to use in broncos. you will also need some good heads there's not a stock head thats worth putting on a stroker IMO. If you look at a lot of the stroker builds people have done for broncos they endup getting fairly low HP numbers. Just the way it is as if your looking for max HP then its not going to be a very good engine for a bronco unless your racing. So really the stroker will add HP just dont expect the numbers that are commonly advertised.
I'm not agaisnt strokers by any means but really the 351 is a better option IMO. Its funny as the 351W was developed as a car engine. I dont think it ever made it into a truck until 1980 or so. Main reason guys convert to smaller mains is bearing speed and a slightly higher RPM capiblity all good for racing means little to how the engine runs. 302 351W/351C all use the same flywheels all use the same engine balance. differance is in the stroke rod ratios ect. thats where the differance is really felt. another option to get a different feeling is change to a lighter flywheel the engine will rev quicker.

what do you plan on using your bronco for?...i mean are you shooting for a daily driver or a trail machine?????.......if its a daily driver i say go for what you want, stroked 302's are cool....trail machine i think i would just build it back to a very reliable 302 or that might be were i would consider a stock rebuilt 351....just havent seen to many stroker motors run that well out in the trails...idk know if they dont like the off camber or not being cooled fast enough or what....just seems like they run different on the trail...idk just my 02.......oh and take pictures either way...lol

Look at the Eagle or Scat stroker packages. I recommend spending the extra money for the forged kits. Then again I am the exception to rule around here.

It's a daily driver / second car / toy but I'm not near any mountains --- thought torque really provides power where I'm looking for increased HP and pep --- thought it would be fun to have some more pep and increased acceleration (maybe sound?).

Body meeting frame this week (finally painted, it's in the paint booth) and have a crate 302 on the frame---never had the big engine in my "muscle cars" and thought this might be a good time to do something so 351 is out but beefing up my 302 is a real option.:D

Thanks for all the great input.

Sounds like yours is a perfect candidate for a stroker motor. Then if yours is a manual transmission, don't be afraid to run a little rumpier cam.;)

Let me get this right, you are going to take a crate engine (that I am guessing is new and never used) apart and make a stroker out of it.

When you paint it, after final color sanding and buffing put a scotchbright to it and paint it another color. Be sure to do this 2 or 3 times.

Throwing money away in strange ways...

To really get the potential out of additional cubes you need some good heads and the right cam.

Here is a good article on what you could get out of a 347 built right. Keep in mind this wasn't a max effort Mustang drag mill it has a Comp cams 258 hydraulic roller and an edelbrock performer EFI set up on it.

http://www.airflowresearch.com/articles/article102/A-P1.htm

Now without a big body lift a 302 with explorer EFI fits nice under a stock hood. The Explorer front dress also fits the 302 nice. When I build a new motor it will be a 347 with the AFR 185s I have. Skat makes a nice stroker kit that is machined well out of the box. I've heard different tales about other kits. I'd buy my stuff from.

He will set you up right. Call him up. He may talk you out of stroking it until you have $$ for heads.

Don't put any cash into the bottom end of the 302. Spend your money on great heads, a cam, and exhaust.

There's no reason to run a stroker 302 in a bronco when a 351w fits easily. You can swap the expensive heads from the 302 to the 351w if you need more power later.

Good flowing heads, intake, and exhaust will make more power than an extra 30ci's.
