I knocked out my old pinion races today fully expecting to find shims behind them and I didn't find any.

Shouldn't there be shims under the races? What am I missing other than a clue?

Is there a good starting point or suggested amount of shims under the races inner and or outer?

EB's have the shims under the bearings on the D44 carrier.

Correct.

Talking pinion rather than carrier.

It's my understanding shims are placed under the races to adjust bearing preload on the pinion. Just trying to figure out if it's normal to not find shims.

the shims are behind the bearings on the pinon and the carrier, thats why they sell or u can make set up bearings to slide on & off by hand untill u get it set right then press the new ones on. I have never seen or even heard of them being behind the races. take the bearings off u will find some, use those as a guide to get u started.

I've only done one, and mine had shims behind that inner race.QUOTE]

Yes, that's where I expected to find some.........maybe mine didn't need any from the factory or they left them out when it was rebuilt by the PO. Guess I'll find out in the coming days as the rebuild starts.

Correct and mine does (I removed all the bearings and races) however I've read (and 70_Steve has seen) there can be shims under the races too. Guess it's not common?

Pinion depth is controlled/set by the large OD shims (same OD as the pinion bearing race) between the pinion bearing race closest to the ring gear and the case where it sits. There is the large oil retention washer in the same place. I don't recall ever pulling one apart that had no shims...

Pinion bearing preload is quite a separate matter and is set after the pinion depth is correct. The bearing preload depends on the much smaller diameter shims that go over the pinion shaft between the inner and outer bearings..not the races..the actual bearings.
