What is a going price for a complete re-paint. I do not need any body work, however the top needs to be taken to bare metal at front edge. What is the most durable paint?

A good quality paint job at a reputable shop will run you $2,000 - $3,000 if you can even find one that will shoot a Bronco.

At the other end of the spectrum, you can take it to Maaco or other el cheapo place and spend $400.

When I painted my '65 Mustang myself a few years ago, the top of the line paint materials alone cost me nearly $1,200.

I found a guy on craigslist who painted mine for $900. I removed all the lights, emblems, bumpers etc. All he had to do was sand and paint. I was somewhat disappointed in the quality of work done. Good paint cost $$ plain and simple.

I am currently in the process of painting mine myself and I agree, about $1200 for the price of paint and materials alone.

Two stage Urethane is about the best paint you can get if it's done correctly. This is used on most restored classic cars, and was used new on most cars built after 1990.

Acrylic Enamel is about half the price, (maybe $600) but fades after several years and you can't buff scratches out of it. It can look almost as good if you use enough hardener and you know what you are doing to reduce orange peel. This is what I am using.

The 500 maaco job won't be that cheap they charge you for the tape, etc and my local mascot was going to add an suv surcharge. They quoted me 1200. I used acrylic
enamel in a garage spray and wish I used urethane enamel. I was able to color sand the ae to make it look nice.

I was quoted anywhere between 3-4K for a good (not show quality) paint job with little to no bodywork and they wanted more for flares etc. I just couldn't see doing it, so I had the entire Bronco covered in Speedliner.
Now, I never need to worry about scratches again-- no body work and the inside and out side and some other stuff (bumper flares etc and installing them) was around 2500.

do it yourself it cost of materials, pay someone and it starts at about a thousand and goes to infinity. most body shop make money off of insurance jobs, called production work. do your homework before you let someone squirt your truck. Or find someone who will just squirt your truck in a booth and do the body work yourself if you can. good body man does not always equal a good painter. base coat clear coat is the easiest to spray.

I checked with two body shops that I get employee pricing at and they were both over $2000.00. That was just to shoot paint with no body work and did not include the hard top.

If your talking about a paint job that looks okay from 50 ft...$2000 should do it. If you are wanting a very nice paint job; sanded and/or media blasted, everything removed, primed, painted, color sanded, buffed, etc. You are going to spend $7000 and up. You can easily have $1200-1800 in quality paint. These quotes are obviously for a reputable builder or painter....not your backyard mechanic.

X2 - any quality body shop or painter will be in the $7000+ range.

Why wouldn't they shoot a bronco?

I've got several buddies that own and run very reputable and quality body shops. Most all of them, cringe at the talk of complete repaints on any older cars.

They know to do it right and to make the customer happy, it takes a lot of labor and usually they end up not making much money on the job. It's simply not worth it to them when they have late model autos lined up at the front door. Think about it...it's easier to repair new cars with OEM and aftermarket parts (essentially jig saw puzzles) than it is to disassemble a bronco, paint it right and put it all back together.

Some just need to be put out of their misery :)

Depending on what part of the country will determine how much you will pay. Our rate is $42 and $24 paint materials. If the shop used a 95 Bronco (there aren't times for older Broncos in the estimating software) it would come out to about 50 hours for just the outside of a Bronco. Not including cutting in the doors, jambs, under hood, tailgate, ect. You can see why is gets expensive.

Then the other problem is finding a shop willing to do it. This is the reason it is difficult for you guys to find a shop willing to do it. In the body repair business we make most of our money by beating the time on the estimate. An all over paint job would take me about 25 hours to do. That is body work done and in final primer. That is only 2:1 ratio. I beat the time by 4:1 on an OK week. That is why the prices are so variable. If you want it back soon you will pay more. If you want it whenever they slow down, they work on it then it will be cheaper. There are a few times that a shop slows down and that is back to school, Christmas, and tax time seem to be our slow times.

Then there are the rusty bolts and other body men issues they have to deal with like fitment of the panels.
Good luck

I've done some pricing around my area and the best quote I've gotten was around $800 for 3 coats of factory paint to include sanding, on the other end I've been quoted $5,000 for body work, sanding and a full tear down with the new type of paint.

Mine cost $7000

Changed color from white to dark jade poly (metallic dark green) with the two stage system, kept top whimbelton white, pulled engine, painted engine compartment, dash, and door jambs, r & r quarter panel and wheel well. Sand blast interior and spray with POR15. The shop took this on as a side job, it has been there since this past November. I miss having it parked in my garage. Slow, but steady progress!!! All this for only $7000!
