I'm looking at getting the BC Broncos Headers and 2 into 1 Exhaust setup. I have been reading old posts on the subject and noticed several comments about the Drone of the SS Magnaflow muffler that comes with the kit. Is there a better choice for a 2 in to 1 Muffler? I'm currently running long tube headers with duals and Flowmasters. The current setup is a bit louder than I would like and it has a terrible drone on the highway. It would be nice to have it fairly quiet at idle and cruise but still sound good when you mash on the skinny pedal. Is this possible without major performance sacrifices? I don't hate my flow masters, I just need to tone it down a bit and make some more room under the Bronco by getting rid of the dual exhaust.

I just got a new exhaust system and did a lot of research and reading beforehand. I also got to listen to the Flowmaster 40, Flow50 and Magnaflow mufflers all mounted temporarily to see which I preferred. I think the Flowmaster vs. Magnaflow is more of a tone preference. The Flow 50 was way quieter than the 40, so that is what I went with. The MAgnaflow Turbo muffler is going to be quieter than the Magnaflow that comes with the BCB kit, so that is what I would probably recommend for your application.

See some more thoughts and photos at the bottom of this thread:

I just installed my own custom build exhaust with WH shorties, a 2.5" universal Summitracing kit and a Flowmaster 50. Everything tucks up above the frame rail and is nice and tight. I'm pretty happy with the sound, it's aggressive when on the throttle, and while cruising it's surprisingly quiet. And not including the shortie manifolds I've only got about $350 or so in the whole system including exhaust hangers I picked up at a local muffler shop.

I'm not knocking the BCB setup, but it does hang down too far for my taste and you still have to fab up your own exhaust pipe after the muffler. So for me I figure if I have to modify something and 'finish' the kit out on my own I might as well just build it from scratch and have a complete custom install.

I have the BCB 2 into 1 and the Magnaflow muffler with a tailpipe. It is about the same sound level wise as the flowmaster duals I pulled off. There is a sweet spot on mine at around 750-800 RPM where the drone is really bad. If I had to do it again I would try the Walker muffler that is a 2 into 1. I have read that it is quieter and cuts out the drone. The Magnaflow sounds more like the old school cherry bombs being a straight through muffler. I prefer the sound of chambered mufflers. I will probably be changing out the muffler when I do my tranny swap since it has to come out anyway.

As far as the BCB kit hanging down, I didn't have that problem. The way the pipe comes sectioned with slip joints I was able to get mine tucked up so the bottom of the muffler only hangs down an inch or so below the frame. Just took some fiddling.

This is a big concern, I hate to spend the money on the headers and 2into1 setup and have it sound the same as it does now. The main reason for this change is that the duals I have now have clearance issues with my rear springs and I'm breaking off hangers left and right. Once I get the new system installed, I'll take my current setup and move it to my 68 Bronco that has stock suspension.

Chuck does carry a quieter muffler. It isn't listed on his site, but if you call in he has one.

There is a thread on here somewhere with the differences. I think it is Heus33 that found the Walker muffler and he has sound clips of the differences. I am really not happy with the sound of the Magnaflow. I guess I am just past the age of wanting loud exhaust. I have also heard some positive things about the Flowmaster 2 into 1 muffler.

Also, you can take your old tailpipe to a muffler shop and use it as a pattern to have another bent up since the BCB kit doesn't come with one.

I have Chucks system and really like it. It's a big pipe, I think 2.25 or 2.50 so you get plenty of flow. Mine does not hang down too terribly bad. I got the biggest magnaflo I could get. I wanted something quiet for hunting, but it does have some interior noise. That can be reduced with insulation or carpet or noise dampening mats. Wish I saw Heus' thread on the Walker muffler bc I would have gone that route. My muffler has the 2 in 2 out, have not finished pipes to rear yet. It's all pointed down just past the rear axle.

Cherrybomb vortex

CHERRYBOMB VORTEX is designed to eliminate cruising drone and still out flows the MagnaFlow and Flowmaster(40 and 50 series). 88109 is a 2.5" dual inlet and 3" single outlet. The VORTEX is available at Duff's for $75. Suzi is running them on Silver and loves them on her dual setup. This muffler gives a nice deep rumble out the back and you can barely here it inside the vehicle. Cherrybomb has changed quiet a bit gentlemen. This is not a glasspack, but a real muffler. Look into it.

It all depends on what you want. When I was young I liked that low drone when cruising now I like it quite. I want to be able to hear the radio, hear engine noise etc.

If you want quiet without a lot of restriction try the dynomax super turbo. Its also pretty cheap. Thats what I have on mine and it has a nice exhaust note without annoying people or getting the attention of a police officer if you accelerate hard to pass or something.

I am finishing up a BC kit right now. Easy install so far.

Chuck was great presale and took me to some good videos where I could listen to the pitch and tone and select which muffler I wanted.

Any chance you can post a video of this muffler in action?

IMO flex couplers are for big rigs, or to bandaid a poorly designed system! A Bronco exhaust is only 6-8' long and shouldn't flex at all if done right...

Really?! Your motor doesn't move any when you get on the throttle? If it doesn't flex any then why do you mount the exhaust w/rubber hangers instead of just mounting it solid to the frame? Did you know that a exhaust system can expand in length upto 1" on a car at operating temp compared to cold start up? A flex couler is used to absorb vibration, and let the exhaust expand without issues. This is a pretty handy little item to have in a exhaust system and most new cars since around 1998 have been using them.

Please don't get this confused w/crappy flex pipe.

I spent $340 to have mine done at a local well respected shop. Unless prices in your area are way higher than that, it doesn't make sense to me to try and patch together a system. I took photos into the shop of how I wanted it done, and got to hear 4 different mufflers before making a final decision. Doesn't get much better than that!

BTW, I'm happy with the sound of my Flowmaster 50. It isn't quiet, but it isn't loud either. I have no sound deadener or interior of any kind.

My $.02
