Anyone know if these guys are on the forums? Sounds like it was really bad! My thoughts go out to those involved and hope they recover from their injuries....http://www.fredericknewspost.com/ne...l&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=user-share

Looking at the steering wheel, the driver didn't have the shoulder harness on, just the lap at most. The way it's bent at an angle to the right, he may have not even had the lap on. That's a hell of an impact. Hopefully everyone makes a full recovery. The suv crumple zones/air bags did their job, as well as the bronco roll bar it looks like.

My farm b agent is a country boy and asked me if I had a roll cage in my bronco an I said not yet but I am going to put a full cage in it soon. He said he agrees 100% but if I ever have a accident that FB would probably drop that vehicle after the claim because it had a cage... I was like that's the dumbest thing I ever heard... Making it safer an get dumped by my insurance company

What makes matters worse is getting into accident with a rollbar. Smashing your unprotected head, arms, legs into steel tubing can't be much fun.

There great if you have a 5 point harness, helmet, and all the other protective gear.

Smashing into tubing is possible but without the tubing smashing into pavement is a done deal especially with a 4,000 lb truck on top of you.

Best wishes for all in this accident. Hopefully for all they get a second chance.

Roll bar padding. Not hard to put in and tape securely. Might detract from the looks but it sure softens the blow,,, to a point.

I guess there's an argument that can be made for both sides. But in a typical 20-30 mph crash a rollbar would definitely increase the likely hood of injuries to yourself and your passengers. I personally would never install one in a street vehicle for that reason.
Just my 2 cents.

I have a set of Polaris helmets im going to keep in my car once its road ready... I may look dumb but it'll keep me from scrambling my head on the ground or roll bar.

I was hoping someone may know who this is so I can donate to help out with expenses

Lot's of scenarios, but in general there's not too many if, any pluses about our broncos in regards to MVAs. It does seem like they almost always end up on their top though. We used to say the that the padding in jeep MVAs just kept the death blow from lacerating the skin lol.

I would like to know for sure if the cage was tied to the frame. If it is, that is going to be my next thing to do on my bronco,my family cage is tied to the body.

I wish someone made an aftermarket airbag steering wheel or even passenger one that could be installed in sheet metal. Make these old beautiful rigs a little more safe.

I feel terrible for everyone involved and it sounds like there were some pretty serious injuries from the accident. I've been in rollovers before and I've also raced in Land Speed Racing events for several years now. One thing that those experiences have taught me is that you NEVER cheap out on safety equipment!!

We are designing our cage to keep it as far from a flopping head as possible. Will be using a through the dash design for the same reason. Then seat belt and shoulder harness. Stock but headrest seats. Not a whole lot more that can be done with these things. Also, mine will never have a back seat and no passengers back there but the dogs.

Not sure I follow your logic there rmk. If you notice, the there is literally no "Bronco" left above the bed rail level. No hard top for it's minimal protection, and no windshield frame which is zero protection anyway. Even if you just flipped the truck over on it's top by hand, the windshield frame would fold under the weight.
It's all cage holding their heads off the pavement.

Yes, they definitely got banged up, and probably got a cracked head or three on the bars, but they would likely be scraping their bodies up off the pavement had the bar not been there to keep them off the ground. Not sure, but the rear seat passengers would probably have fared worse than the front, as they're sitting higher in relation to the bed rail.

We see in the pic that they did have full harnesses in the rig, but no telling if they were using them or not at this point. Maybe the harnesses helped, or maybe they kept them from being able to stay out of harms way too. More likely they helped at least a little.
And while the harnesses would not have let them duck for cover (if that was ever an option anyway) between the seats, the harness would not have been there had the cage not been there to mount them to.

Actually I do see your logic. Just not sure I agree with it.

Paul
