I am just turning the engine by hand at this point. No starter, no noise. With the starter installed it sounds like the motor plate rubbing the flywheel.
I have a 1987 5.0 with a NV3550. I bought the clutch and flywheel from TBP. I bought a mini starter from Amazon for a 1997 Explorer. DB electrical SFD0040 even with the starter pretty loose it still makes the noise. Any ideas? I painted likely areas on the starter snout and nothing shows up. It seams to sit in place without any real effort, no binding.

I painted the area of the flywheel you can see. There are no marks on it either. Really weird.

Do these use shims? I stuck the washers between the starter and the block and the noise is still there.

You are running a Manual Trans... You ordered a starter for a 97 Explorer...

Explorers never came with a Manual Tranny, only automatics.

Sorry to say you have the wrong starter...

Ha! Well at least it's an easy fix and I don't have to pull the engine back out. Is there a mini starter that came from the factory for a manual?

Thanks for the help.
