Sorry in advance for the long post. Seems my new gears and higher engine rpm's have highlighted some engine issues. I have not done anything to the engine, so as far as I know it is a stock 302, egr deleted stock manifold with stock motocraft 2100 2-barrel carb, points distributor vacuum advance.
Awhile ago when I was going through my brake issues I adjusted the stock points timing (coil and vacuum advance) to 15.5 degrees advanced for best vacuum at idle to help my brake booster. This was never an issue with idle or pinging prior to new gears. Got the new gears and noticed a substantial RPM difference while driving around. Went out for about a 30 minute drive and got a VERY LOUD backfire. Never had backfire issues before. Did a quick visual and nothing seemed out of place or disconnected under the hood. Kept driving and got a second backfire. Moments later the engine stumbled and shut off.
I let it sit for a bit and after some easy cranks it fired up. Got it almost home and it shut off again. I have two clear plastic Napa 3003 fuel filters and could see gas in both. Got it started and again and got it home and that is where I opened the can of worms.
I'd like to break this down into two different areas... Timing and Fuel.
Timing:
I re-set the timing to 12 degrees advanced, idle was at around 800ish (not stable) in neutral, 630-650ish in gear. That setting gave me right around 15lbs of manifold vacuum at idle. C-4 Auto trans. Without the vacuum advanced hooked up it flattens out around 37 degrees all-in advanced somewhere at close to 2800 rpm's. With vacuum advanced hooked up it reads just over 50 degrees of total advance at the same rpm's. I have no idea if it's a stock cam in there or if the balancer with the timing marks is correct. Are those numbers within spec? I can't find much about it for older timing.
Fuel/Carb:
That smoothed idle out a bit and I took it out for a couple test drives. No backfires, but it stumbled and shut off on my twice. Second time around I didn't immediately try to restart and popped the hood. Front filter was almost completely empty. Rear was full. Little engine cranking and it fired back up, but anything over just off idle I was running out of fuel and shutting off. Got it home and checked again and noticed a ton of bubbles in my fuel lines. Also noticed the rear filter was now only half full and trickling (thinking something in the old rusty tank is blocking the pick up) I replaced the fuel pump and all fuel filters. Needless to say, there was some nasty stuff in those filters. Brown stuff on the rag came out of the inline filter that screws into the pump.
Got all of those replaced and got a new fuel pump installed. I'm not convinced the fuel pump was bad, but after seeing what went through it, I didn't want to mess with a cracked or clogged baffles. I was also hoping this would solve the fuel delivery issue with half full filters. Prior to any of these problems those filters were always full with no bubbles. While at it, I pulled the top of the carb off and saw pretty much the same bronze colored fine dust in the float bowl of the carb. Pulled the carb off and used some brake cleaner to clean it out... I know, but I didn't have any carb cleaner sitting around.
Got it all back on and my fuel delivery issue is still not solved. I can tell while looking at the filters it's intermittent. Sometimes they are completely full, other times running out of gas, which take me back to something clogging the pick up inside the tank
I should add that I was trying to save a couple bucks and used a very old tank that sat outside for years. I cleaned it up inside as good as I could, but nowhere near sanitary as evident by those filters.
All of the above considered... Now I can't get it to idle, and starting it is nowhere near as easy going as it was. In an attempt to not just start throwing parts on random things I'm wondering what you guys think I'm dealing with here.
Plan going forward is to replace the old fuel tank regardless of everything else, which will also come with a new sending unit (greeeeeaaaaattttttttttttttt). I'm crossing my fingers those parts are good right out of the box.
Other than that, I'm kind of at a loss where to start.
Carb rebuild? (should note I've never had a working choke on this carb and it was never an issue before)
New Points?
Re-set timing to 15.5, set the carb to super rich and cross my fingers?
What say the experts?
