I have a delphi coming today and was wondering if a stock bronco power steering shaft would work with the delphi box? or are the splines different? I did a search but couldnt find exactly what i was looking for. thanks in advance.

Depends on which Delphi box you got?

I have made a Nissan Delphi box work with complete bolt on parts. I needed a steering shaft off a Mercury Villager and a rag joint off a Nissan titan and that all bolted up to a '73 power steering/automatic column. Only took a tiny clearance notch for a pinch bolt to clear the splines on the mini-van shaft. Everything was the correct length and splines, the rag joint was universal enough to adapt to the Ford steering column.

But since there are many variants of the Delphi box, this may not work for you.

My delphi box came from a Nissan Pathfinder with hoses $75. A pump from a Ford van with hoses $40. A steering shaft laying on the ground near a late Ford Bronco $15. Pump bracket $30. Have the hoses mated togeather $30. Installed less than $200. The rag end of the steering shaft fit a little sloppy but when the clamp bolt was tightened it seem OK but I drilled it out for a larger bolt to fit tighter in the flat place on the box shaft. The EB coluum shaft was cut to fit and a hole was drilled through and bolted in place. You can be safe and still be on a budget.

Don, I hate to tell you, but you don't have a Delphi steering box.
The recirculating ball steering box was last used in the pathfinder in '95. That was in the WD21 series. In '96 the R50 series Pathfinder came out with rack and pinion. Stayed rack and pinion with the change in '05 and again in '13.

Delphi didn't get the contract for steering gear boxes in the D22 and WD22 (first gen frontier and Xterra) trucks until midway through the '01 model year.

What you have is the ToYo steering box. Mounting is exactly the same, only the fluid line fittings changed. There are internal differences as well.

I helped the worker at the wrecking yard take the gear from a Nissan Pathfinder. I did not know what year it was and at the time it did not matter. I do not know if it is a delphi box because there is no name on it It does look like all the pictures I see.

The banjo fittings state that it is the ToYo version. Delphi uses Inverted flare fittings for the pressure lines.

You seem to know these steering gears. What does Delphi mean? Do I have a Delphi steering gear in my EB? I do not know the history of the steering gear before it came from the Pathfinder. If it is TOYO that is good to know for future repairs. I do know it seems to be a very nice setup.

Not to be a pain but in reference to the specific questions there is no stock Bronco steering shaft that will hook to any commonly used version of the "Delphi" steering box. The splines will not match. Delphi is the company that manufactures a multitude of parts for the auto industry. You will need to see what you have and take some measurements, count splines (if there are any many Delphi boxes used an offset DD input). etc. Snap a pic of the input and post it up. Good luck with the project.

I will take one tonight. I have a stock steering shaft, pulleys, and pump so I am thinking it would be easier and cheaper to just go with a stock box.

Delphi is a spin off supplier that was once owned by General Motors. They are now in the market supplying parts to whoever is willing to buy them. Just like GM's old in house axle supplier is now in the open market as AAM and selling to Dodge and Jeep.

ToYo is a partial name of a steering gear supplier. I forget the whole name, I couldn't pronounce it. One of those asian names. Same deal, they are a supplier. Delphi stepped in and offered up a better deal to be the supplier. Could be anything from exchange rates to shipping logistis that played a part in it.

Thankfully they are good steering boxes and I have never needed to open one up.

Just like you want a light bulb, you can get one from GE, or Phillips, or...

If you are not able to modify used parts that may be the best move or start saving your pennys for a $225 shaft.
There may be other things to do with the Delphi instalation depending on what box you get. Only two mounting bolts line up and the third is a half hole off and has to be drilled. I had to remove the indexes on the pitman arm. It was also to short and need to be lenghened about a inch to get full travel for stop to stop steering. The tapered hole was not the size needed to bolt up and has to delt with. Hoses have to be made up. If you can common sence modify used parts, do the leg work and on a budget you will find there is more than one horse in town.

I can do the modification, thats not really a problem but I just dont really want to or have the time, if that makes any sense. I am pretty close to having this thing ready to roll and i just want something simple to bolt on and be done with it. For some reason, when i bought the box I was under the impression that the only mod needed was the hoses, no big deal there. But if I have to get new hoses, steering shaft, and drill out the frame it becomes more trouble than it's worth IMO. So I may just sell the box I got and get me a stock one. Thanks for the reply and help.

Here's the image of maggard's box.

maggards delphi box.jpg

A bit small, as he said, but looks like one of the standard boxes we use for replacements on Broncos.
Hard to tell the spline size of course, so you will have to verify that unless someone with more experience can tell by looking.

The input shafts can vary by application or customization.
