Replacing one of those old school, high torque, really heavy and awkward GM starters with a late model starter that weighs 1/4 of what the old starter did, AND spins the engine over faster was what sold me on them. I've now put PMGR starters on all of my dailys that didn't already have one.

I don't know about 1/4 of the weight, but I do know that the 1984 Ford F250 with a 6.9L Diesel came from the factory with a Delco-Remy 25823 Starter that produced 3.0Kw and weighed 31.6 lbs. The 1996 Ford F250 with the 7.3L Diesel was equipped with a Mitsubishi designed Delco-Remy 99402 starter that produced 3.6Kw and weighed 15.3 lbs. So 1/2 the weight, Much smaller, cheaper, and MORE power. And they last longer.

I was a skeptic right up until the time I turned the key. Now I'm with you 100%. PMGR all the way.

1/2 the weight is probably closer to the norm. That first one was one of the extra long GM SBC/BBC starters that takes two men and a boy just to lift into place.

...a late model starter...spins the engine over faster...
The '95 4.9L in my black Bronco is still using the old-style starter that I bought for the '83 carb engine like 25 years ago. The '95 4.9L in my blue '95 F150 uses its original PMGR starter. They start the same. I can't tell a difference in their speeds, or the weights of the 2 starters just by hand - I haven't weighed them, or measured their current draws.
