170 carb issue

It has run great for years.. about two weeks ago it ran out of gas.. Ran fine after for a while, weather is warmer, but now if i go over a big bump, rough pavement, or take a sharp left turn it spits and stalls, will on occasion completely shut off, and will have to let it sit before it cranks. Idle is smooth, if you push in clutch as it starts to stall or flood, it usually gets better and can keep driving? Any easy ideas?

Sounds like it caught a floater or two and now has something in the float bowl that is blocking flow when you hit a bump.
That or maybe the float just needs re-adjusting and it coincidentally waited for running out of gas to act up.
Carburetors do that kind of stuff...

Other than that, I don't know much about the specific carb on a 170 to know if there are any particular things to look for that are unique to that model.

Lots of six fans here though, so hopefully someone will have an answer.
But until then, things like the idle speed have remained the same? So smooth and even, but just when hitting a bump or cornering is when it acts up?

I just went thru this, I had similar symptoms with my 66 - 170 it would idle fine and run pretty good but every so often it would miss. I ended up looking at the coil & it looked fine until I removed it and found the backside(toward the motor) looked like this. I put in a coil I had on the shelf & it runs like a charm now, even better since I adjusted the points. Good luck with the carb I rebuilt mine twice & never got it to work right so I got a rebuilt & I don't let it sit for more than a couple days without running it.

Hi, I wonder if the resistor part of the wire inside the cab is still good. I think half of it is red/green and the other half is pink. this wire goes from the ignition switch to the inside firewall connection.
What happened to the wire going to the coil?
Do you still have an original ignition system?
Can you measure the voltage at the coil with the key on?
Good luck

Your description says "let it sit before it cranks".

The engine not cranking, or not turning over with the starter, isn't a carb issue, it would most likely be an electrical issue with the starting circuit.

So you hit a bump or turn left and it dies, and sometimes it has to sit before it will crank (before engine turns over with the starter) is it - that isn't carb related, do I have that correct?

It fires right up even after stalling, for a split second and dies as you mash peddle. If you let it sit, like you would a flooded engine it will crank and stay running. At times I can keep cranking with starter and get it to keep firing and run. Replaced coil. Seems to run better. Carb seal didn’t seat well. Leaking fuel from midline of carb. About to try that seal again. It did seem to have much better throttle response right from idle. Had a dead spot before this new fix attempt.
Thanks all.
