And sorry to hijack the thread, but two more questions.... Tank has never been used and still looks new on the inside. Should I put any coating or anything in it or good as-is?

On the outside, paint has worn off. Should I use some of that Steel-It paint or is something else someone recommends for that?

I didn't use anything to line the inside of my tank. On the outside it's all personal preference. I used POR 15 on everything chassis related because I could Brush it on and it looked great. But really it's up to you and what quality your looking for.

Thanks! And thanks for the idea of the chassis as well. I need to figure out what to do on mine. Had it sandblasted and I epoxy primered and sprayed it in a booth when I started the project years ago but over time the paint has chipped in a few spots. Primer is still there and good but maybe I should've chosen different paint. Need to find the right touch up paint.

I need a new sending unit on mine and the one highlighted in this thread looks great, but mine also has the fuel pickup/line integrated into it. It's a custom made tank that came with the Bronco and I'm not sure what the sending unit came out of.

Maybe post some pics if you can so we can see.

I bought my tank a few years ago then left it sit till last last fall. I ended up putting it in so I could drive the Bronco to a huge local car show. I did all the normal... inspecting the inside and it looked good when I installed the sending unit. fast forward to the last few weeks when I took the tank back out to put the high volume pump inside and my sending unit magnet had a bunch of weld splatter stuck to it. So what I am saying is.... Make sure your tank is good and cleaned out probably best to rinse it out with some type of fuel tank cleaner before you install it.

Yes times 100!
Funny we have not had this discussion recently that I remember, but it's been a huge part of the whole new tank experience just about forever.
Even with a basic cleaning by the manufacturers (sometimes) there is still plenty of stuff left inside to warrant a good cleaning before installation. I guess I'd better re-check the status of our M1A1, but with the old Sherman and definitely the old NWMP a good cleaning was a must.
Either that or be prepared to clean/replace filters fairly often for the first few months/years.

To be fair, my old NWMP from approx. the mid-nineties was clean as a whistle (or at least I thought it was) when I installed it and I never had any filter problems. I did occasionally have carb issues with stuck needle-n-seat action, which could have been ascribed to "dust" particles in the gas, but had that issue with the old original tank as well. Might have been dust and debris that finally got sucked up, or it might have just come in the gas I was using, but it never became a huge or constant problem.
In later years we did hear about that a lot here on the forums. Almost every tank install instigated a rant about crap in the tank and the need for pre-cleaning.

Take heed then!

I like the spacer idea the best.
I grabbed the other gasket and it is .122" thick and tried it but not good enough, so 3D printing the spacer now out of PETG which I read is more resilient to chemicals than regular PLA.

Although using it I guess I’d have to think about a sealer between the spacer and the sending unit or another thin gasket. Or maybe it’ll be ok without anything…?

Maybe some copper spray gasket is ok with fuel?

Mine is clean on the inside, surprisingly. I bought thing thing in 1999 and it’s been sitting ever since, part of that time outside but I never removed the caps or the duct tape on the pump and sender holes. That tape was toast but still covered the holes.

I will have to clean the outside before painting and then clean the inside of any debris that gets in there from my exterior clean but easy enough to block the holes to minimize it.
