I have a 3 speed transmission with an older floor shifter unit. Shifter unit was rebuilt a couple years ago and has been mostly great. I had some issues getting into reverse last year, butg was able to remedy this problem by going through my linkage and adjusting. This year the Bronco has been going great, but 2 weeks ago it started popping out of reverse. It would engage and move the truck for a second, but then it would pop out. If I held the lever in place, it would still pop out and grind. Yesterday I crawled under the Bronco and had a look at the linkage. It looked a little out of adjustment so I opened the tunnel cover, placed it in neutral, shoved a drill bit in the neutral register hole. Under the bronco I popped out the lever arms for first/reverse, adjusted the little threaded button (i forget what its called) and went back up and shifted through the gears. It felt great so I fired her up and gave it a test. Reverse seemed good, it wasnt popping out, and was easy to get into. I did a few laps around the block, pulling over and backing up and taking off etc. Everything worked as you would expect. I went to pick up my GF from the train, and pulled into a spot to wait for her. When we went to leave, I couldnt even get the shifter to go into reverse. All other gears were nice and easy, but reverse was impossible. We pushed it back out of the spot and I drove it home.
Today I crawled back under to give closer look. I put it in neutral and disconnected the linkage entirely. With just the arms on the shifter at the transmission, I was able to get into all the gears EXCEPT reverse. 1,2,3 have nice solid affirmative click ins, but reverse just kind of stops dead before it goes into gear.
So now for the question. What am I looking at here? It seems my problem lies beyond my linkage, but it is very possible I am overlooking something. I am confused as to what would have happened so quickly between my attempted fix with good results and getting completely locked out of reverse.
