351w build, or 408?

In the interest of getting back on topic, I am seriously considering going this route to replace my tired (and currently dead) 351W: ATK 408W

I got one positive response in another thread about ATK Crate motors, any thoughts?

I am not sure I follow ahansen_1985's logic on his gear choice as gears and 37"s are on my long list but I am interested in talking 408Ws.

I have been running an ATK 351W for twenty years. In typical EB owner fashion I haven't put that many miles on it but they have been tough miles. zero issues.

For that kind of money find your local pro assembler and hit the Mustang boards and get yourself a pile of parts and have someone loacl put it together. Vauge parts list, small cylinder heads and unknown cam - but has a warranty... Still is a lot of money - I was putting together a 427 build with premo top of the line parts and I wasn't even going to get to half of that bill...

$3000 for a premo top of the line 427? I am guessing that is without heads. Ford Racing charges upwards of $8k for theirs with a warranty but it will be closer to $10k to get it as complete as the ATK (flywheel, distributor, and intake.)

Unfortunately options are limited on Oahu and I'll pay through the nose on shipping but a local shop buys enough ATK motors that they get a deal on shipping.

We'll see . . .

So no gear change. upgraded motor will only move the powerband up making things worse so just supercharge what you got. You could also chop the truck up and shoe horn a stock 460 big block. If you want diesel performance why not just put a diesel in it. This way you can achieve what you want and save your precious 3.50 gearing.
Once you get your project done please post back and prove everyone wrong we'll be waiting.
all the luck to you, your gonna need it.

I know this thread is a few weeks old, but I'm sitting here on Vicadin and have to comment:

You want torque? Get rid of:
2 1/2" exhaust (that is WAY too big for low end torque)

Try this, I can't believe no-one has suggested it:

Drop in a USED pumpkin with 4.56 or 4.10 gears in it. Cheap, EZ, done in a few hours and THEN you can see what everyone is talking about. Don't like the new found power and torque? Then sell it and be out ZERO dollars!! Why is this so hard to figure out-really, just asking? not trying to be offensive

Seriously tho, drop in some Bronco brothers rear gears for a few days and try it out OR buy a used pumpkin and sell it after trying. You will experience what everyone so far has suggested (and you've resisted) AND you will do all this in a few hours.

THEN go out and build a 393 for the same price as a 351W and enjoy a bit more torque (just for fun).

Let us know what you finally did--

1) used gears for a trial run

2) mega bucks for a serious stroker (393's and 408's are cheap)

3) nothing...
