Would like to change if not at least check the fluid in my 4 speed trans.

Standard gear oil. I'd recommend synthetic 75-140W not real sure on total amount as my toploader sits in the shed but it should be about the same amount as the stock 3 sp. probably at least 2 quarts. Yes just drain and refill I'd also recommend getting a magnetic drain plug it will help pull metal out of the oil keep it alive much longer.

I don't think a top loader has a drain plug. That pull the lower bolt holding the transmission to the extension housing (transfer case adaptor) is the drain plug. Don't make a magnetic version of that bolt.

Not to worry, use a magnetic fill plug. Lot easier to keep an eye on things as you see if you have fuzz (normal wear) or chunks (you are not nice to it). The last 2 vans I checked the diff oil on (Ford and Chevy) had magnetic fill plugs from the factory. I do that to all of mine as well. Much easier to keep an eye on things without having to drain the oil.
