Okay...I know there are some folks on here who can help me with this choice. I need to choose a hydraulic roller camshaft for my bronco.

Engine...1971 351W with a 418 stroker assembly that will be 10.2:1 (4.100 stroke crank, 6.200 rod, +22cc piston) with my edelbrock performer rpm 60cc chamber heads. (2.02/1,60). Lightning GT 40 tubular upper/lower intake, 75mm TB, 76mm C&L mass air, 30# injectors, 1.75" long tube headers & 2.5" dual exhaust, AOD trans (also haven't made a choice of convertor), Dana 20 T/C, 4.88 gears & 37" tires.

PM Kyle Malone- He just had a custom grind made for his 331 that is supposed to be pretty killer.

Id get ahold of a few cam companies give them your specs and you need to state your intended driving needs. Low RPM offroad, higher RPM, Hiway cruising ect. whatever fits closer to what you want. Get a few responses from them. They will probably fairly similar and if your still undecided come back here and see what others think of the choices.

Thanks Broncnaz, I'll try that. I can assure you that this thing won't be a high rpm flyer. Lol. Top speed will be about 70-75 at around 2200-2400 rpm thanks to the AOD, but it's still a brick. :D

Flowtech Induction grinds custom cams, billet, cast, whatever. Specializes in custom work.

http://www.flowtechinduction.com/

Ed designed my 418 roller cam for my stroker. .588" lift at .050" and 219 in and 236 ex... valve timing, overlap, etc on it is designed for max torque and my specs...

I called Comp Cams 3 times, made sure I talked with different techs each time, and got a HUGE difference in recommendations for my very specific use of the vehicle. Not pleased at all with such a wide variety of "professional" recommendations... I was very clear in intended purpose, vehicle parameters, gearing, all other pertinent information that they needed to help me pick a cam.

Thanks Nvrstuk, I sent off the "Cam Tech Form" last evening. Maybe I'll hear something back next week sometime. With the holidays, I'm not gonna hold my breath though. Lol

they only deal on email so that's the right way to contact them. Flowtech has a great reputation with all the Mustang, 5.0 crowd...

Thanks!

I have had great luck with Comp Cams.

They can make suggestions based on application and build anything you want/need.

112-114 LSA to start with. EFI/Computer friendly.

redline cam and cranks in Albany, Or is the MOST reasonable priced custom cam grinder I know in the USA, get your recommended specs such as adv dur. duration at .050 ,lift, lobe separation etc and bill will match those specs as close as he can based on a HUGE selection of masters. He can not cnc program cam specs but his master selection is huge and growing all the time and can usually get within a few degree on adv and .050, lift etc and lobe separation and centerline can be easily set. last grind he did for me was a hyd roller that was 276-284 adv 226-234 .565 lift with 1.6 rockers (we used 1.7 rockers for .600) with 110ls and 110cl for a 358w build with eddy e205 heads, runs hard from 2-6k and I believe the cost was 125$

Do not even think of using CompCams for any technical advice. Just like Nvrstk.....I got 5 different answers from 5 different people.

Call Woody at fordstrokers.com and he'll set you up with a custom billet cam. Or try Scott at CamResearch which is who did mine.

(I take it you are using the retrofit lifters in that non roller block? Also, sounds like you may be choking that 418 a bit with choice of intakes, TB, and injectors.)

fyi there are very very few cam grinders that can cnc profile a cam, even comp and most all the big grinders use machines that grinds based off masters. and the guys who can cnc a custom just want to much $ in my book when there are masters that are so close usually that you lose nothing hp and torque wise. there are so many companies that act like grinding a cam is a major event and time consuming when it really is not !! I also want to note that the oil band placement varies on lifters especially on the lifters that claim you can install in either early or late roller blocks so cam base circle can be a important consideration. I would try to avoid the retro rollers as there base circle is very small, but you may not have much choice getting your rods to clear the cam with 4.1 stroke depending on the rods you have.

I've rechecked and the TB I actually have is a 75mm so I should be good there...the 30# injectors are to small...you're right on there...I'll upgrade to 42# probably and I believe the Lightning GT40 upper & Lower will supply enough air to at least keep the Eddy heads fed...I hope. Keeping in mind that high RPM isn't my goal. And, unfortunately, yes I'll have to use the retrofit lifters...if they'll clear the rotating assembly :(. I didn't even know that could be an issue...gee, thanks 74strokerbronco...

Duration and lift and lobe seperation are only numbers, cam engineering has come along way. Entry and exit ramp design really sets what's differnt from todays camshafts from older technolgy. What do want from your camshaft---good torque and power, single pattern lobes work great ie; duration, lift, and a wide lobe seperation. This combination seems to be the most desirable for 4 wheeling, keep that in mind when designing a custom grind.

Who's masters are they using? Harvey Crane, Harold Brookshire.

Hey crawling, good to chat with you again.
Let's see : He (BILL(went to high school and very good friends with))took over the business like twenty-five years ago so many are handed down, lots and lots of old school stock and performance grinds then any time he has the chance to cut a master from someones cam to feel a gap in his inventory he does. I imagine many are crane, comp, insky, crower, etc along with oem and others, takes a few hours to setup and cut masters but over the twenty +years his master inventory has got huge. He reground the solid roller I run from comp but only the exhaust side (got it slightly used but was a blower app. cam with a huge exhaust split.) the shop also use to have a military contract but with the recent budget cuts that trickled to neal. they do a major amount of local crank and cam grinding for most of the Willamette valley machine shops. they also do computer engine balancing. bill did a cam for the toyota 4cyl 4x4 guys that won a cam shootout years ago in one of the mags that's still popular.
send me a PM if anyone wants more info or contact info for them. their a small local shop/business that is owner operated, friendly, knowledgeable.
bill does all the cam grinding and balancing himself !!;) they do also have the cam doctor tool/computer program.

Hi Harlen, my preferance is Harold Brookshire.
