I would like to find a core 4r70w and build it with my boy.

Since the 4r I'm currently running came from a 98 Explorer 4x4, I already have the adapter. Does it stand to reason I can now get a 4R70W from just about anything, remove the adapter or tail housing, install my adapter and be good to go?

Of course I realize there is solenoid and wiring differences in the 96+ transition, and there are two output shaft length variations. Are these puppies pretty much identical other than that?

I know the 3.8, 4.2 and 5.0 cases should have the same bellhousing.

It sure would widen the field of possibilities if I didn't think I was limited to Explorer 4Rs.

You should go with a 98 or later because it will have the correct connector type and has the 2nd gear mechanical diode upgrade. Understand that if you get a car or truck 4x2, the output shaft has to be replaced which means a total disassembly.

I plan to do complete rebuild anyway no no biggie there.

Thought it was 4x4 version that had to have output replaced because it was longer and we mitigate that by trimming it.

There are big differences between the car 4R70W and the truck 4R70W valve bodies.

You will probably find differences in the number clutch plates between V8 and V6. I've even seen differences in the clutches between '98 and '99 5.0 explorer 4R70Ws. '98s had a 4 plate reverse clutch, '99 had 3 plates. That's all upgradable if you can find the correct parts though. Big changes to the internal parts happened in 2004.
