6 Point Roll Cage-Glove box access

I need to replace my homemade, by PO's, 4 point traditional roll bar. It looks to be made from rusted irrigation pipes. Seems that it would not fair well in a rollover. So I am gtoing to have a 6 point installed that protects the driver and passenger.

The question is this: Do all 6 point roll cages block access to the glovebox?

Main reason for the question is do I need to replace my stock glove box with one of the Tuffy security boxes that opens on the left to make room for the rollbar?

Thanks!

A lot of really nice mods have been made to the dash to make the glove box doors narrower so you can still use your stock insert. A quick search will net some thread results. I haven't seen a 6 pt cage that allows full access to the glove box. I would think the cage bar in front of the box would have to be bent in then up.

Bought a tuffy and tried to install without removing the roll cage......not gonna happen. Unbolted dash and contorted every way except removing the steering column with no luck. Tonight's project is re-assembling the dash then tomorrow remove the family cage and put the new box in.

That's exactly what I was afraid of:(

There is a way to modify the door hinge so that it will open a little then slide left and open the rest of the way. Some people have put a hinge vertically in the door so that it folds during opening around the cage. There are a bunch of mods out there.

I cut my dash to remove the glove box and the vent next to it, flipped the whole piece over and welded it back in. Basically just moved the glove box over a few inches. Had I seen or thought about the hinge slide trick before that is what I would have done.

this one fits but the cage is jammed against the door. I have seen the tube flattened slightly in that area too for clearance.

Funny you should ask. I was facing the same problem and I just finished my solution about an hour ago.

Taking a design cue from the Jeep JK Rock Hard Sport cage, I made a Bronco version in CAD

I won't bore you with a lot of details, but check out the photos:

To achieve a few goals, the cage is tied to the body at 16 key points. (and 6 to the frame) I spent a lot of time in CAD, FEA modeling things against some crash data I found and a federal motor vehicle standard for roof crush.

Maybe you can work out a similar solution.

I've got a 6 point "San Felipe" and took it out without mounting it. The front legs do more than block the glove box. They get in the way of getting your feet in. They block the parking brake peddle, the auxiliary tank switch, the vent windows, and the windshield fold down knobs. Front field of view isn't helped either. I'm going to cantilever a loop that goes across just behind the top of the windshield frame. Extra bracing would be added at the ends. It couldn't support the weight of truck in a rollover, but the important consideration is keeping the road off your head. The basic 4 point bar does that. I may get the WH family bar to make a platform and sun shade over the whole passenger compartment too.

Digger 556 that's one of the best ideas i have seen in a long time. Solves so many issues. I'll be definitely spinning your design in my head.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

I think the idea of making the glove box hinge slide over will work best for me.
While I like Digger's fabrication that is way above my abilities.
No welder and no desire to mess up my Bronco with any sort of hack job that I would do.

What we need is one of the Bronco cage fab shops to make them like Digger's design.

Or someone to make a parts kit to convert an already existing cage.

This is what I was was thinking too. I want to go from the 4 pt bar to 6 pt cage. A design with cleaner lines than tubing. I don't like the looks of all the round tubing. Too many years using electrical conduit I think. Same with bumpers, anything but tubing!

My $.02... I'm going to run mine without the door, just an open horizontal surface to put crap on that I don't need secured. The "important" stuff will be locked in the center console. It's a thought I had and ran it by another bronco buddy. He actually slapped his forehead and said that he never thought of that.

You can buy kits with our EB glovebox setup factored into their design.
