I am putting a 77 box on my 72 with the stock tie rods . Which pitman arm do I need?

Use the pitman arm that goes to the drag link you are using. Either will fit the steering gearbox, but you need to match the taper for the draglink.

As I recall, the early linkage has the larger tapered hole (but for some reason I get that mixed up without loking sometimes even after all these years!). ?:?

I think the 76-77 have a smaller taper from the pitman to drag link. The 66 also has the small taper. From what you wrote use the 72 pitman. BTW sell or trade the 77 pitman. They are harder to find.
