66 Bronco engine upgrade 6 Cyl to 5.0 Coyote

I am a new member tonight and I am looking for technical input. I have just purchased a 66 Bronco U15 that has great sheet metal, 6 Cyl and 3 Speed stick.

I want to resto mod it by upgrading the drive train. I do not want to lift the Bronco any higher then normal. What I am looking at is a 2013 5.0 with 6 speed automatic. I see plenty of 5.0 or 302 installed in the Bronco's but have not seen any of the 5.0 (Coyote) motor installed.

I my question is can it be installed without hacking up the wheel wells? Is this 5.0 to big for the Bronco, HP wise? Will all the axle and diff's handle the 5.0?

As a new comer to the Bronco I want to get up to speed quickly before making a costly mistake so any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks Jerry :)

ps any pictures of this motor installed would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats on purchase. It's been done several times. Yes it fits, the headers are a hard squeeze I think. Bc broncos makes a lot of parts and Tumblin automotive has some stuff too I believe. Do some searching.

As far as other parts that can handle the abuse, it can all be upgraded. I don't think in 66 stock form you could get by. Again, welcome. Good luck. Post pics.

The only problem with that idea is that I don't think anyone makes a controller for that trans......Yet.

The set up I am looking at is out of a 2013 F150 and comes with all wiring and modules. I am assuming the trans stuff will come with it but I will ask for sure.

Than you guys for the vendor names. I have only talked to the bronco graveyard guys so far.

I will get some photo's of the ride. It came from Henderson Nev, so solid piece that has the steering bushing and all steel lines replaced, motor and trans rebuild and body busing replaced.
I think she will make a terrific ride.

As mentioned, it has been swapped. It does take a pretty big shoehorn. Icon did one of the first ones, they also used a widened custom frame so the engine fit better. Not touching the inner fenders? No promises there.
something to think about, the F150 transfer case is too wide for the narrow Bronco frame rails. The stock Bronco D20 won't bolt right up either.
The Bronco frame will take it, the stock 9" you can expect to loose a shaft. 31 spline upgrade and better 3rd member will fix the rear axle up easy enough. That much power through the stock D30 front axle won't last long if the tires ever get any kind of bite to them. If you don't pop U-joints first the teeth will strip off the ring gear fast enough. Dana 44 front axle with better shafts (really bigger U-joints is all that is really needed) will get the front strong enough.

No recommendations for wiring and reprogramming so it will be happy running as a stand alone system.

The trans control is still done by the PCM, the problem is that the PCM is dependent on many other modules for data via CAN. So it can't be run standalone like we do with earlier EFI systems. There are probably 6 or 7 other modules that would need to be wired in at a minimum, and it would probably still be angry about the 10 other missing modules.

That is why Ford racing offers a standalone PCM and control pack for the Coyote. Unfortunately, it doesn't support the 6 speed trans.

If you have a line on a decent donor, by all means grab it. I just wouldn't plan on being able to run that trans until a standalone controller comes out for it. There is enough demand that I think we'll see one soon.

POk grat input men. I also have a lead on an 07 Mustang Saleen Motor and trans. That will be a lot cheaper for sure to buy. It also comes with all the wiring and controls. Sounds like that is a better way to go.
I saw a picture with the Coyote motor installed in a Bronco and I fell in love with it.

I could still get the Coyote and sell off the 6 speed and drop a 5-6 Speed stick into the Bronco I would assume? What kind of $ are we talking to upgrade the front and rear Diff's and axles?

Thanks have a great day.

Careful picking a trans too fast, putting a transfer case on the back can be a challenge if not impossible. There is also a length consideration. You have a pretty short wheelbase, not room for a lot of driveline length. People have been known to go through a lot of work just to gain a few inches of driveshaft length. Being that you plan to keep stock height that isn't as much of an issue, but still something to keep in mind.

First, welcome and congrats on the new purchase. Couple of questions first.

What is your end goal, what do you want to do with the Bronco? Is it going to be just a street machine? Used off road at all? Do you care if it is 4wd when you are done? Your level of mechanic and custom fabrication ability?

Yes, the initial idea of a Coyote in an Early Bronco is awesome. Modern engine, modern horse power.... Its exciting. But the reality is that what you are thinking about doing is very difficult, time consuming, expensive, etc etc.... The changes you are suggesting do not offer many, if any, prefabed adaptors to help you. Unless you really really want to go down this road, why not do what has been tested and refined by many before. Put a strong 5.0 efi, or if you just want raw power, go with a 351 efi, or even better, one of these options stroked. Both have been done many times by guys on here. Both have options for unreal horse power. Use the incredible amount of knowledge on this site to help you.

Good luck. And don't act to quickly. Make a good, sound, rational decision.

BC Broncos makes an entire kit with 4r70w tranny to put a 5.0 Coyote motor in.

The kit goes for about $15k.

Jason told me it is a complete kit with everything needed.

You will probably need to upgrade the rear axles to 31 spline and possibly the transfer case if you plan on running it hard. The Atlas TC is another $2800.

I've been a Ford tech for over 25 years and I love the New 5.0 and the mod motors they have all been great except a few of the three valve mod motors. That being said I'd never put one in a early Bronco just to much hassle even more so if you've never done a motor/EFI swap. If I were to do a swap at this point I'd go with a 5.0L (old school) out of a Explorer and run the matching auto transmission and also run the EDIS ignition system that came with it. Just my $.02

I want to be clear I only want to swap motor and trans only. I am not going to be going off road at all. I want to do shows and drive on cruises. I want eye popping though when you lift the hood and about 325 -350 HP. I am good with the 85 to 92 5.0 and have also looked at adding the after market efi kits to the 5.0 that will allow for quick tuning. My frame under side was done when I bought the Bronco so I would not want to mess with it unless I need too.
I am doing the Bronco in Triple Black and want the sizzle to be under the hood. I hope that all make since. I restored 10 Mustangs and now I want to get a little wilder with this beauty.
Great input guys.

I had a late 80s 5.0 Mustang motor in mine with an AOD and it was a turd with 34" tires. Get the Coyote motor or do a stroker.

As long as you have the funds it can be done. The 1966's will not have the preferred Dana 44 up front or discs so there will be some additional work needed. I have a 4.6 Cobra modular motor in one. It had custom frame work and a number of other changes to make it work. It looks like a factory install but it isn't easy. Go for it and make sure to post up pictures.

I love it! I would rock that thing as is. It's already got a little lift (by James duff?) and one of the expanded size rear gas tanks.

What is the vin on that truck? Does it start with U15 or U13? You do have the correct 66 rear seat. No eyebrow grill though. It looks great..... Good luck with it. And its yours, do whatever you want with it. Don't be talked out of what you feel you really want to do.....

Thanks for he inputs. It is U15 vin #. Is the seat I am showing incorrect for the Bronco? What is the eye brow grill? What else do you see that may not be correct?

I just want to know as much about the classic as possible, so thanks for your inputs.

You can still get the wow factor from under the hood without having a coyote (although it is pretty cool!). I have a pretty basic '95 351W with lightning upper. Should be all I need to push this thing around.
