Yep, no way to easily remove the switch from the dash until you get the lock cylinder out. It's an "interference fit" so to speak, so one won't come out without the other.
You could use a locksmith to get it unlocked to do the paperclip routine, but unless your good buddy is a locksmith, any visit to do that is likely going to cost so much more than the new stuff it's not worth it.
The original switches were probably better than the new stuff, but they eventually wear out too. So if yours is original it's likely not a bad idea to replace it anyway.
Never drilled one out myself either, but if you go that route don't forget to disconnect the battery first!
