72 blinker wiring

I can't understand the diagram I found for my '72. I'm replacing the blinker horse-shoe and I lost my notes of what went where. I have been able to figure out where the YL/BK, GN & BL but I still have something hooked up wrong. It would help if I had some idea of how the diagram worked. The common is the big black dot in the middle but when you turn the blinker to the right or left do the 2 little flags on the right or left make contact or what? (I'm new here and I don't see how to post picture attachments. Maybe after some more posts).

Hey sunbelt, welcome. Not sure about your electrical issue (yet) but posting pics either takes an independent hosting site like SuperMotors or one of many others that you post up pics to, then link them in your classicbroncos thread.
The other, easier way (but harder to justify perhaps, after only just joining) is to become a contributor by paying your 13 bucks I think it is(?) and then you can post away to your heart's content right in the body of your message.
It's very convenient that way.

Regarding your issue, I've always hated the '72-only wiring diagrams. Just plain weird I always thought. But haven't really spent much time with them either, so maybe I'm just not giving them a fighting chance.
Let me go look at mine and see what I can come up with.

Viperwolf1 may chime in soon though, and is a wealth of detailed wiring knowledge. When you come across them, keep a link handy to Steve83's home-brewed wiring diagrams. Good detail and lots of updates to make them even more accurate (based on the real-world) than the original ones you find in Hayne's and Chilton's.

Hang in there. You'll get it licked in short order.

Oh, and include some details in the setup pages of your User CP (control panel) so we know approximately where you are and what Bronco you're working on. I know you said it's a '72 (obviously), but knowing where you are can actually net you some local help sometime if you ever need it. The folks here are pretty darn helpful.
And fun too, as they usually bring stuff to eat, drink and compare Broncos too, when they invade your space on work-day!

Using my '73 diagram (have to dig for my '72), I'll go through even the ones you've got figured, just to cover all bases hopefully.

Blue = 12v in from the flasher relay unit.
Green w/white = Out to left front turn signal AND dash indicator.
Yellow w/black = Out to left rear turn signal.
Red w/black = 12v in from brake light switch.
Green = Out to right rear turn signal
White w/blue = Out to right front turn signal AND dash indicator

These are only their functions. Their actual locations in the harness might be harder to pin down, and most of them go into or out of the hazard flasher switch first.

Hope that helps.
Oh, and since yours is a '72 and a transition year for '73, it might have a Blue w/red wire up inside the steering column. That's for the PRNDL indicator lamp. Only used if you have an automatic transmission obviously, so not connected to your turn signal switch.

Try these diagrams. Note where the switch makes contact in the different positions.

Constant 12V from the brake sw will override the pulsed 12V from the haz flasher and the front turn lights will work just like the brake lights. The haz sw just basically shorts everything together when its on.

That clears up a lot. I never would have imagined that's how the contacts change when turning the blinker switch. It is an automatic, btw. Thanks for all the help guys.

Well, if that is in fact how the blinker switch works, then they sent me the wrong one. There's just no way I was able to get what's in the diagram to match up with my logic diagram. I checked it over several times. Thanks for the help but I must have the wrong switch. [edit: I take that back, I checked it again and it should work - disregard]
