The ignition control module on my 1975 Bronco is leaking a sticky mess all over the place and I need a replacement, but I understand they are unavailable.

The part number is D5AE-12A199-A2A and it is a 7 wire.

The strain relief looks black.

Is there a drop in replacement suggestion that is available?

Thanks!

Sam

All kinds of them. U can get them at your local parts house for about $12 to $15. But try the junkyard first for a motorcraft one. They last much longer

I find lots of options for 6 wire units, but not 7 wire.

The '74 and '75 units had a redundant wire. The new versions of those should work fine.

Black grommet is '74 module. '75 is green grommet. Maybe yours was caught in the crossover. Those modules are not interchangable.

There is one NOS on eBay for $135.

Here's a thread off a Ford truck forum; http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-module-fits-a-early-1974-f250-390-truck.html. The illustrations are the best I've been able to find to see the differences in the Duraspark II and pre Duraspark electronic ignition systems. By studying them you can see that by simply cutting switching and splicing the 2 wires in positions 7 and 8 in the harness connecting the module to the distributor/coil, a Duraspark II module will work in a '75 Bronco. These are the evolutionary descendants of the '75 solid state ignition, so the bugs were worked out. They continued to be made and improved through the '90s. New Duraspark II conversion harnesses made by Painless and American Autowire are only made for Duraspark. No one makes a '75 harness for good reason; there are no quality modules available. New US made Motorcraft Duraspark modules are still available. Here's an example; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ignition-Co...ash=item2ca8239fc4:g:FZIAAOSwzhVWs~H3&vxp=mtr. Trying to fix a '75 Solid State system with quality OE us made parts, is an exorcise in futility. It's likely impossible. The '75 DY-166 modules have a green strain relief and the Brown wire is redundant and omitted on replacement modules.

Ok, now I'm confused. Will the DY-166 I've ordered replace my defective D5AE-12a199-A2A out of my 1975 Bronco or not?

Thanks

The wiring to the plugs looks like the '75 wiring. I don't know why your grommet looks black. The DY-166 should plug right in and work.

Sam, the numbers on yours "D5AE" indicate it is a 75 so what you ordered is correct. It may be missing one wire as Jckkys indicated. I mounted mine on some spacers to allow airflow underneath to help keep it cool.

Modules are identified by a colored plastic square above where the wires feed out.

1974 only: D4AZ-12A199-C .. Ignition Module Black Plastic Square (Motorcraft DY-157-B).

All 1974 FoMoCo vehicles.
-------------------------
1975 only: D5AZ-12A199-C .. Ignition Module Green Plastic Square (Motorcraft DY-166-B).

All 1975 FoMoCo vehicles.
-------------------------
1976/79: 1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D6AZ-12A199-A, D8VZ-12A199-A, D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module Blue Plastic Square (Motorcraft DY-893).

This module was used well into the 1990's on myriad FoMoCo vehicles.

The DY-166 did the trick. After the cleanup of a sticky melted mess, the new DY-166 dropped right in and the Bronco started right up.

Thanks for all the help.
