76-CA Bronco need of smog help

I've got a 76', more or less stock. I'm exploring options to get the vehicle cleared for smog. Currently it has none of the equipment on it.

For the past few years of ownership I've had access to fake certs. That utter dried up and in the process my tags expired. Perhaps it's for the best as I'd like to handle this as legal as possible but from my research and visiting a couple of mechanics this sounds like it isn't going to be an easy feat.

I don't have the means or the know how to put the system together myself and would need a good mechanic recommendation in the San Diego, La Jolla area.

I do have access to mailing addresses in both Utah & Montana and could theoretically get the car up there if this would present a longer term solution to my problem

Could really use some advice on both the long and short term solution front.

thanks

I could figure out how to upload snaps right in the post, but here is a link to a few images which may be helpful

Got any relatives that live out of state? If so, or good friends, register it in that state and live your life free of the Californication reins! Thats the route I would go.

Never delt with cali smog, only AZ. It can be challenging...
I would start off with an inspector and they should have a list of what your vehicle needs. There is a lot of parts that have to be present and working. from the air filter to the gas cap. Evaporative emissions system, stock carb and (usually) stock air cleaner. Catalitic converter. EGR and air injection. '76 had it all.

Thanks for the tips guys - I PM'ed the guy about his smog setup and am definitely looking into out of state registration, I have connects in Utah and Montana but am not sure if the car would need to be present in either state for inspection. Additionally the little bit that I see about Utah online looks like I will need some degree of equipment.

I think it would be easier to swap in a newer fuel injection motor with all of the required smog stuff than search out an buy all the origional equipment and make it run properly.

Send me a PM. We can talk about it. I'm in east county San Diego and have learned a lot along the way on my 76 and what you may have to go through. Long and short of it is I'm going EFI.

Be careful. The CHP (and perhaps other agencies) are cracking down on residents registering their cars out of state.

To be honest, the smog system is relatively straightforward. The Thermactor ("smog pump") just runs a hose to each exhaust manifold, and there's a bit of vacuum plumbing as well. That's assuming the ports in the manifolds are still there, as well as the bracket to mount the pump. You also need a closed EGR system, and of course a catalytic converter.
