So I am waiting for a rebuilt 3rd member with 4.11's (in transit)to swap into my stock 9". I am not too intimidated by the swap, just curious if I should get some new axle seals?, new bolt set, w/ copper washers etc? any suggestions? oh and btw, once I do this my 4x4 capabilities will be rendered useless untill I swap the dana 44 in front. 1 step at a time...

Axle seals would be a good idea. Also if your unsure how old/miles are on the axle bearings you might want to replace them as well. Copper or aluminum washers are also a good idea as the old ones will usually be toast.

If it was mine, I'd replace every wear part, seal and gasket that I could afford to do while I had it apart. Do it right, do it once!

Do a complete rebuild... bearings, seals, etc. Best to take care of any/all problem areas while its apart. If you're setting up the gears yourself, get an extra crush sleeve as its very easy to over-crush those. Then when you re-install the differential into the axle housing, I've had the best luck just laying a bead of RTV around the gasket surface and bolting it all together. I didn't have good luck with the gaskets they sell for that surface.

If your're going from 3.50 to 4.11 you'll need a speedo gear with 2.5 more teeth. That's not really an option-you'll have to choose 2 or 3.

Tire size does affect the gear but only if you're changing that also. Gear is in the D20 at the end of the cable. One small clip holds the gear on.

You need to count the teeth on your current gear then add 2 or 3. If your speedo reads a little slow now go with 2 teeth more. If it reads fast now go with 3 teeth more.

i prefer guessing....or pursposely passing a police officer fast to see where he clocks my speed, then it will be perfectly accurate!....Viperwolf, another member here is offerring me a set of d44 4.11's, I asked him if they where the thick set, so I dont have to swap carrier, he said he thinks so, any sure fire way or thickness measurement to be sure? Ty Again, again, again

Have him give you the part numbers from the gears, then look them up. There's probably a measurement that can be done but I don't know what it should be. Someone else probably does.
