Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of getting a different steering wheel.

Is anyone running one of these 3 spoke late 70s Ford Sport steering wheels?

If yes, please post a pic or two. Also, what do you think? Any problems?

Thanks and have a great weekend!
Chris

I have been using one for over 20 years now. If I recall correctly I had to fab something for the turn signal cancel and there is no horn button.

I have one on mine. Horn works but turn signals do not cancel. Not the best pictures but here they are.

I have one in the garage I'm planning on using,it's not bad ,but I wish there was someone that could refurbish it to make it look better. IF someone offered a reproduction piece I think it would sell good. Then again it might be too pricey, I've seen the horn button in Dennis Carpenter's catalog selling for around $80.00.

Bear1911, I think the 76 and newer columns are a larger diameter so I don't know if the horn contacts meet up on the older columns.

Ox1, GREAT PICS! Wow, that wheel looks great and I really like your mirrors too! What are those mirrors off of? Oh I'm installing a 78 tilt column too.

JSBX, nice rig, cool pics too.

Deano, from what I've heard that was a limited edition steering wheel that Ford used in everthing from a Pinto to Torino. Do you have any pics of your Broncos with the steering wheel?

broncosam, yep, repops of the horn button are about $87. . . OUCH.

Thanks everyone!

Justafordguy,
WOW! Your Bronco looks so civilized, plush carpet, new paint, good seats, even fuel doors. I like it! Thanks for the pic! FYI, If you ever want to make the horn work, you could install a tilt column from a 78, just my 2 cents.
Looks great!

Hey Chris,

Just wanted to throw my $.02 in...

I will be running a 79 tilt column with the Ford Truck sport wheel. Its not installed yet, so no pics of that yet.

If you want a working horn, make sure you get the correct steering wheel. Like you said, Ford used it in lots of different cars/trucks. Some of those cars had the horn mouinted on the turn signal stalk (i.e late 70's early '80s Mustang). The wheel from this car does not have the setup for a horn. A wheel from a truck would have the correct setup. The easiest way to tell is to look at the back of the steering wheel. A wheel setup for NO horn will look like the first pic. The second pic is a wheel WITH the horn provisions.

As far as I have seen the black steering wheels do not have a horn and the chrome do. Unfortunately I have found more of the black ones than the chrome.

I think it's bacause the horn contacts don't line up from the column to the steering wheel.

If I remember correctly, the early Bronco column is a smaller diameter (3 1/4") than the
78 columns (about 4") at the signal assembly area.

Maybe the contacts don't line up or maybe the horn button isn't hooked up?

Just my 2cents ...

This is correct. I have not seen one of the black wheels that has provisions for a horn. This first picture from my earlier post (#14) was from a black wheel. Just a blank cover plate on the backside, no contacts for the column, no connectors for a horn button. The horn button itself is more of a cover for the steering wheel hub, not an actual functioning button like on the chrome steering wheels.

The black steering wheel I have came off an '82 Mustang, which had the horn located on the turn signal stalk. No need for any of the horn guts to be located in the steering wheel, as they are all in the stalk/column.
