Auxiliary tank cleaning

Dropped my plastic auxiliary tank the other day. PO said need to make sure to drain gas in it before I use it. So I did, blackest gas I have ever seen, pulled the sending unit out in pieces. The tank itself is very clean (plastic) but the tubes (gas tank fill, overflow tube) has this rusty barnical stuff on it. Is there a way to soak this tank in something to get the crap off?? I can scrape some of it off with a screw driver but its not getting all of it. Hate to but a whole new tank just because of this. Thanks

I had to put a piece of chain in mine with some rust penetrator. Something like the liquid wd40 you can get in a gallon jug. Then i shook it all around. Made sure i had the hole closed off and shook it all over the bottom sides and top really good. Dumped it all out and looked in it with an extendable mirrror. Had to do this twice before i got all the crap out. The. I cleaned it with degreaser and soap and water. Blew it out really good and let dry over night. Looked like new the next day. If its really wet inside use anfan to force air into it. This was on the poly rear tank but should work in the aux tank

Thanks, but my issue is with the tubes that run inside, they are kinda "suspended" inside the tank. Ill try to take some pics.

I had the same problem..... I drained tank, removed sending unit took my pressure washer and worked over the inside of tank and tubes as well as possible. Then stood tank on end and poured in a couple gallons on Purple Power cleaner/degreaser refill remainder of tank with water and let soak about 3 days. Emptied tank again and pressure washed again. After that .... tank was good as new....... Replaced sending unit with new one.

I've had metal gas tanks cleaned by radiator shops before. They may be able to do those tubes if you remove them from the tank. I wouldn't think it'd be a good idea to do that to the plastic tank.

Found some more bullshit about this tank. Gonna have to scrap it. Looks like the PO screwed some screws in the side and sealed it with something...Guess he was trying to fix a leak. Surprisingly it didn't leak but not going to take any chances

I am not using my aux tank right now, but it leaks from the top from where the sending unit is, a common issue. Is the steel replacement any better or is it just as good to get the plastic OEM ones?
