Last year a friend told me about a really solid original 1970 Bronco and I went to look at it and loved the rat-rod feel it had. He wanted a lot for it and I passed on it, but a couple of months later my wife said out of the blue, let's get that Bronco. So we went back and picked it up. Shortly after that the Ford Horsemen named it The Red Rocket because of the racing stripes.
It was cut and slightly modified with a hurst shifter, and 77 front axle. It had a crazy set of stripes right down the middle that kind of made us laugh. We bought it to restore and with all the other things going on I wasn't going to get to it for a year so I put it in the barn and pulled it out now and then for a spin. It had a 4" drop pitman when it didn't need any drop, shot ball joints and tie-rod ends so it was a handful to drive with horrible bump steer but something about it was just a blast and I drove it every chance I got.
With Super Celebration coming I was planning on driving my 73 down the 600 miles to go to the show and then I got to thinking I could make the 70 drivable and make the trip in the rat-rod. I had a set of Duff's T-Rex arms, springs and heim joint steering setup already in the garage. All I needed was a few items to make it road worthy so last week I dove in and started wrenching. So far I've picked up a rear tank (it was missing), put some new tires on an old set of slots I had, put new bearings, ball joints, brakes and bushings on the front end along with the T-Rex arms. I put a new rear main seal in because it was leaking badly.
In the next week I'm going to get a hard top on it, install the gas tank, install a Duff's transfer case shifter and get it aligned and try to get some test miles on it to see how it runs. With any luck I'll see a bunch of you at Super Celebration!
