so I've been scrubbing tirelessly on the bottom of the truck and have finally gotten most everything down to bare metal. My original plan was to use the KBS product to treat and paint the bottom of the floor pans and chassis a satin black. After more thought i entertained the idea of using a roll on bedliner to coat the bottom of the pans in an effort to keep some sound and heat out. I know that upol raptor liner, lizard skin, and a couple of others have been used but i wondered if anyone knew of a good roll on application? Its a tight area and a brush or roll on would be easier. Lastly - obvioulsy the exhaust will run near this stuff, any issues there? is it worth the extra money and effort to deviate from my original plan of the KBS paint. How much real advantage is there to the bedliner from a sound and heat standpoint?
Anyone done anything like this? i saw the monstaliner product was popular on the jeep sites?

I would have to differ on the use of a roll on. Aluminum foil makes a great wrap to protect what you don't want painted and the raptor liner sprays very easy and is hard to mess up. I would have to really think long and hard to opt to roll or brush the stuff on. Just my .02 after using the product.

Roll on sounds easy but in the long run you will be a lot happier with the results from spraying it. Like englewoodcowboy said foil works good, just take your time and mask everything off and spray it..

correct, body is on the frame so I'll be under the truck while its on jack stands etc. Its pretty tight under there and there are many tight spots that I don't think I can get a spray gun. maybe I just need to have a better attitude about spraying and just mask everything off and see what I come up with. Seems like the roll on would come out okay but I also know I'm picky and wont be happy unless it looks really good. In retrospect I should have just taken the truck all the way down and put it on a rotisserie but hindsight is 20/20.

Besides looking cool and making everything more uniform from the bottom, is there any significant advantage to raptor liner? instead of just rattle can or using the KBS chassis coat on the floor pans? sound/heat? I'm definitely going to use the KBS chassis coat on the frame rails but considered also painting it on the bottom of the pans etc.

I'll try to post some pics up in this thread on the underside and how clean its come. The years of oil leaks and mud caked on it has preserved the metal incredibly well - it's like brand new almost 100% - well, besides having to degrease it like 800 times so far.

I have been entertaining the same idea as you. But I have decided (I think) to go with undercoating just in case I would need to remove it to replace something or just repair the undercoating after wheeling. But I still like the idea of using bedliner on the underside. We were also thinking of applying it with brush on instead of spray on.

whatever you choose do a 2K product. That means a 2 part system that has a catalyst hardner. 1K paints like rattle cans suck....unless its the stuff with the glass ball inside that brakes when you first shake it. The Raptor sprays easly and gets in pretty tight spots. It should shoot sideways and almost upside down when the cans are first full. I did use a 1k roll on liner on my trailer floor one time, but it was hard to get a consistant texture. The suspended stuff in the can falls to the bottom so basically the front of my trailer dosnt have much texture but as I got to the back, and towards the bottom of the gallon can, there was more textured stuff that I was able to get, and the floor was way more textured.

The raptor is pretty hard stuff so im not sure its any good for sound. But its a great product and super cheep! That's what I used on the bottom of my tub and ill use it on the inside as well.

One thing you can try, to get more room to work, is put the front wheels and tires on and use an engine hoist to lift the back. Lift it as high as you can, take a couple 2x4's and make a temp brace to help support/stabilize the rig. If you don't want it on the frame rails, wrap them with cheap foil and spray it. I have used the raptor liner on my yamaha rhinos and it def, reduces the tin sound of the beds so I know it does provide some sound deadening but like Bknbronco said, it is a harder surface so it is not going to be as deadening as something that stays relatively soft. On the flip side, the stuff is extremely easy to repair should you somehow damage it. I know there is another product called shultz coat or something like that. I can find out for surge if you need me too, that is designed as a self healing undercoating. All of my tractor trailers come with it applied for rust prevention and it works really well but it is soft and stays that way. Not soft enough to run off etc. but it does self heal if you scratch a frame rail or pumpkin. I want to do another bronco in a few years after this one is done and it will be for playing off road and I will be using that stuff on it for sure.

Okay. So i've finally decided to go with the raptor liner OVER the kbs rust shield product. I called KBS and they say that I can spray the raptor over the KBS as long as the kbs has not fully cured - a bit tacky would be ideal. they say its a fairly common application. I'll get some foil and tape and paper and try to keep everything as neat as I can. I'm considering dropping the axle housings as well and cleaning all the years spray painted mud off of everything as well. As usual, this small project has turned into a big one. I gotta get it torn down, cleaned, painted and back together before super celebration. this will be a tight schedule! maybe i'll make this thread about it and update with pics as I go.

okay guys. I've got some updates. I did the kbs system and it worked great. that stuff is tough. after that i waited for it to flash a bit and the sprayed raptor liner to give it osme texture. I think it's mostly for looks as as it won't add any/much sound deadening or heat resistance. I already have about 1 ton of dynamat (actually Raamat) in the truck. here are some pics of the progress.

the before pics of the axle housings are after the acid etch solution, thats why the look chalky. I'm hoping to get the chassis finished today (KBS rustseal and no raptor on the chassis). I'll be happy to have a break from under that truck. BTW - KBS, like POR15 is not fun to get off your skin. lol

Thanks. Finally finished the rust seal on the chassis. I'll get a pic up tomorrow. The kbs products are great. (Unless I go out there tomorrow to find it's sagging or peeling or something.)

Looks sweet. Its always nice to see somebody do things the right way! Are you glad you chose to shoot the raptor rather than brushing on some inferior products???

I am actually really happy i used the KBS and went with the spray on raptor liner. that stuff is fun to spray and gives a great texture. I shot it with about 65psi with trigger pulled and found that to be the correct texture for me. goes on smooth and fast. only used about 3/4 of one of the quarts. gonna do the inner fenders as well once i prep and paint with kbs. I found that a very small 4" roller works great for rolling the chassis and a cheap brush for around the body mounts and leaf spring perches. stuff self levels like crazy
one note for anyone doing it - go behind yourself with a flashlight at night if ya can. I went back tonight with a flashlight and found a hand full of spots that need to be touched up, either with the kbs or the raptor. I'm picky that way but it looks great. really happy with the result. now waiting on some parts form vendors to get this truck put back together!
