My passenger side latch linkage is broken on my tailgate and the tailgate is in the closed position. Any suggestions on getting it open so I can repair/replace the rod? Any ideas will be GREATLY appreciated!

you should be able to get a small screwdriver in the end where the latch is and push it back out of the striker plate. make sure to put some masking tape around the area so you don't mess up your paint. Also are you sure that the rod is broken or it may just be one of the plastic retaining clips.

A lot of times one rod will come loose in the middle where it attaches to the handle. Once dropping that out, you can pull the rod to open or repair.

I pulled the handle apart because I tohught that it had just come out of the clip. When I disassembled the linkage from the inside the rod just pulled right out and I could see where the rod had just snapped off. I've tried using a screw driver and also bent a piece of aluminum but haven't had any luck getting the latch to release. The driver side will push in but the passenger side is really stuck. I've only had the rig for a couple of weeks so I'm unfamiliar with any previous issues the PO may have had.

Is there anyway to remove the tailgate from the locked position?

you could remove the two bolts holding the catch to the body but i dont see how you would get a socket in there? Maybe a open end wrench? Other than that you have to keep trying to get the latch to push in far enough. Maybe you could go through that handle hole with the rod from the opposite side and hook the latch and pull it open??

Just keep fishing! Dont let that tailgate kick your ass!

This is what your trying to catch from the inside...

THX BKN, I appreciate the support! I tried to get the driver side free when i was in there but i could get it out. I was afraid I would break it too and double my trouble. I need to find a schematic of the linkage so i can understand how this thing goes together. here must be some kind of keeper on the rod to hold it in the latch pin hole.

Never surrender!

Grab someone and have them help you move the tailgate around a bit as you pry the latch. There is tension there somewhere. (probably the reason the rod is broken) When you put it all back together make sure you adjust the lock plate to relieve it. My guess is someone adjusted it tight to keep it from rattling.

There is only a clip on the handle. The latch side is just held in there because the rod has them bends on the end. Unless the rod is really rusty it should never break. I wish i had a spare rod to send you but i just sold my 2 sets the other day.

This picture sucks but you can see the "S" bend on the one end...thats what holds it in.

Unless you just don't want anyone knowing where you are, fill out the rest of your profile. Someone may be close with parts you need and willing to donate, sell or help. I know I still have a lot of stuff laying around someone could use.
