Bronco Vendor Part Quality...

This is not a callout thread so I am not going to name names...

BUT

Is there a source of QUALITY parts for our trucks?

I have ordered numerous parts over the last few years from the Bronco specific vendors and am always just a bit disappointed on the quality.

A water pump that needed the bolt bosses spot faced to match the factory pump.

Seals and gaskets that are low grade rubber and foam.

Reproduction hoses that are not formed when the factory ones are.

The final straw was last night when the brand new fuel pump that I put on as a preventative measure leaked from the poorly machined outlet fitting.

Is anybody else feeling this or do I expect too much?

I definitely feel this. For off the shelf parts I steer away from the Bronco Specific vendors because they're typically pretty opaque about the brand or manufacturer of most of their wares.

Realistically, in general, customers shop by price rather than quality - and this will drive quality down.

For general parts, I'll look at the list provided by RockAuto's website and then base purchase on price, warranty and name. I may shop various vendors for best price, fast shipping, etc...on said item.

For instance, RockAuto shows five (vacuum) fuel pumps. Four with 1yr warranties, and one with a limited lifetime warranty. In this case I'd buy by name, and buy the Walker fuel pump, even if the Spectra had the lifetime warranty.

Hi, we all know what you are talking about.
My last order had fortune cookies in the bottom of the box.
I use the Bronco vendors for Bronco parts I can't get anywhere else, but the are many parts common to all Fords that I can find at my local auto parts stores. The local guys will often times offer a premium part and an economy part, as well as different major and not so major brands so I can have a choice in price and quality.
Good luck

agree with all the above, Bronco vendors don't even cross my mind when it comes to fuel pumps and water pumps etc...if my local parts houses don't have it or can't get it (which is becoming more and more common) I go with Summit and have it next day. Only problem with that is I always force myself to think of other things I "need" to get to the $99 mark for free shipping %):D

I was just about to post a similar rant myself after a very frustrating weekend putting my grill together with all new reproduction hardware. What should have been a simple 1 hr process of assembling all new parts into a NOS grill turned out to be an afternoon of frustration.

- Headlamp Adjusters that all the vendors sell do not fit our grills, no way these would ever go in as is. Had to file down plastic to get them to start in the slot before being able to press/tap them in.

- Headlamp buckets and headlamp retaining rings that do not fit together. Bucket trim edge OD was too large and therefore would not allow the holes to line up for the trim ring screws. The really sad part is these parts came from the same repo manufacture. CHECK YOUR PARTS!

- Grill trim, come on...what surface are these supposed to fit. No where close to being formed correctly to lay properly on the grill stamping.

- J-nuts for the headlamp trim rings, supposed to be correct but not like the OE clips and would not allow the trim rings to sit flat on the grill surface. They actually stuck out past the rim and could be seen. Went to the local hardware store and found the correct j-clips. Why couldn't the well known Bronco vendor of NOS parts have sold me the correct clips when they are readily available?

- Grill stamping, in the past I bought and returned one of those grills advertised as off Ford tooling that was so twisted and miss formed I was actually pissed that they were allowed to trade on the Ford name. Obvious nobody was checking the part against any kind of jig let alone on a vehicle.

I grew up as a mechanic and now work in the big 3 auto industry for our favorite mother ship. I have done part engineering, quality engineering, manufacturing engineering, program management, etc.. I get this is the aftermarket industry and the volumes and margins don't pull the same level of attention or level of manufactures for these parts, but if you're going to spend the money to tool the parts why not tool them correctly.

For example, the dash bezels for our headlamp switches, heater controls and such, if your going to tool these why in the hell wouldn't you tool them with the correct font ?!

So I'd like to make a suggestion, actually two...

First to the vendors, if you take the time to inspect and get to know the parts you're selling us, check them for fit and finish and then give us an honest review you would stand out and draw my business. Let us know if its an accurate reproduction or will need minor fitting. Is the font concourse correct or just a good looking fresh part. Don't sell me a repo headlamp bucket and a repo headlamp ring in a kit if the two parts have no chance of going together. Check these parts before you sell them this way. I don't fault you for the parts, I get that you are just a reseller but you are the first line of defense for our hobby, you can pressure the manufactures of these parts to do better.

Second to the moderators here, can we start a thread or sticky for part related experience good/bad etc. ? Not to shame vendors but to simply have awareness of the good the bad the ugly. Rules would be part info only with specific details and photos when possible. For example... I bought x part, it fit perfect or it had issues and this is what I had to do to make it work. This does a few things, helps other understand what to expect, helps vendors understand where issues are, and hopefully helps the manufactures do better.

I completely agree with this thread... And it is not Bronco specific either, it is across the board for all older vehicles.

My son's 2001 Bullit mustang needed the 3rd brake light assembly replaced, sun rot by the previous owner. You can buy the off shore replacement for around $100 or you can buy one from Ford for over $200. The reviews for the off shore part are all over the place, so you go with Ford because you want to make this as simple a project as possible.

Same car, front brakes... Yesterday. Order the new premium rotors and pads from O'Reilly's middle of the week. Take things apart and the pads are wrong. Make the call, there are two options for brakes, standard or PBR calipers. I wasn't given an option, We don't have the ones you need, but can get them around 2:30 (We started at 10) Fine order them... Son goes down to the store, calls first, since no one called us. Comes home I open the box to find the new pads are defective. Call them up and say the new pads are defective.... do you want us to order another set? No I am making the drive to Napa now.
I will accept some of the blame for not looking real closely at a car I rarely drive or work on... But come on :-X

Most of my stuff comes fro. Napa but even they carry a cheap line of stuff to compete with the big chains. I always ask for the better quality parts when I go in

I'm talking about the stuff like body panels, trim, emblems, etc the you would have had to buy from Ford Parts back in the day and now are only available from off shore reproduction suppliers.

Things like fuel pumps, headlamp switches, brakes, engine and chassis parts, things that fit many Ford vehicles and not specific to Broncos I still buy whenever possible from traditional local parts stores like Napa. Why wouldn't you unless you're out in the sticks and must ship. Quality control is better and you can return in person if needed.

Its the Bronco specific parts that need help.

Unfortunately nowadays the consumer has become auto parts companies quality control guy. They just swap it out for another one till it works.. It's like a propane exchange program lol you buy a new tank use it once and then it's all a gamble after that.

when it comes to aftermarket body panels it just isn't going to happen you always have to make adjustments to just get the piece on . late model or old, aftermarket does not have the million dollars invested in tooling that the oem does. don't expect perfection if you're building a crawler or trail rig they are perfect for a show truck they are just a starting point
when doing collision repair I have found some parts that are a bit heavier (nordan if still in business) but even if you find a supplier the next part may not be the same . aftermarket lights that are plastic and made originally in Taiwan are a safer bet for later model non bronco part.

Bronco Parts Vendors

I just joined the Bronco forum today at the advice of a vendor, and I too feel your pain as most vendors are using parts made in China.

Anyway, I’m wondering if anyone knows of a Bronco vendor who might want to refurbish my old, original parts (e.g. dashboard pad with cracks; old back seat; wheels; hard too; etc.) as I am updating two of my current Bronco projects.

They quoted me just over $500 a couple years back. I was going to do it. I may still do it. However, I think I like the dash-delete look better. May never go back...

It is a crapshoot and you have to do a lot of forum reading to get a somewhat educated guess sometimes. I am doing major sheet metal replacement and went through three vendors to get parts that are close or even half way correct in some cases. There are choices but a lot is education and learning unfortunately.

Years ago our country decided that it did not need to manufacture anymore and most of that industry just went overseas.....I spoke to a number of venders and they could not get the parts made here so they had no choice but to have the "chinaman" make them, and now we are stuck with garbage!!! With the "Amazon" mentality these days I only see it getting worse!!!This is also the reason that people will pay a premium for NOS parts these days....
