Burning up coils

just a guess, maybee someone will chime it

If it is a stock coil there should be a resistor to drop the voltage to 6V
if the resistor is not there, may cause the coil to burn out

If not a stock coil, the resistor might be a issue, putting 6V where the coil wants 12V

in 1974 you had 2 different ignition systems one for 49 state with points and the other one for California. Are you usine the right coil for the system you have? The other thing to check is the power to the coil off when you turn the key off. If you have power leaking to the coil and the engine isn't running you can burn up the coil.

just curious, did you not have a resistor or was it not at 6 volts before?

If it has a resistor I do not know where it is. I was told it could have a resistor wire on it,
I have no idle.
