C4 question. late to engage reverse but all forward gears are fine.

Having an issue with a C4.
Reverse gear takes a while to engage, feels like low on ATF but all forward gears respond like normal.
Need to get RPM up and then it engages but it hammers it. Had to replace U-joints on driveshaft 2 week ago.
Fluid level is good.

That is the initial death throws of a C4. You could check the reverse band adjustment see if it is correct. It could go for years or get worse real quick. Fresh fluid could help.

Yeah, mark is probably right. Mine did that especially when cold. Soon low was doing it too and then no reverse or low. Check the reverse band like he said but also double check the linkage and make dead sure your are not splitting reverse and neutral.
