c4 tranny removal. how?

trying to pull out my c4 transmission and transfer case as one unit. having trouble getting to the bolts that attach to the block. seems like its impossible to get a tool on some of them without lowering the motor.
any tips or tricks? thanks.

I just did it on Saturday. The only one that was really difficult (for me) was on the driver's side about 1/2 up. A short socket and a ratchet with a high tooth count was my solution.

Having done this job, those bolts are really not that hard to
access. Get half from above and half from below. You should have the driveshafts and exhaust dropped or already, right?

Hi, my Bronco has a 6 with a 3 speed, but on regular cars I remove the cross member and let the tranny down a little to make room between the bell housing and fire wall. Good luck

Way easier if you drop the tranny/transfer case down a little and come at the bolts from the back with a long extension and wobble socket.

Stack up all your extensions and get a 9/16" socket that is also a universal joint. You have to get them from way at the back.

Top driver side bolt is designed to NOT be had from engine compartment. Engineers spend years in school figuring out how to make working on stuff as hard as possible, this is but one example of their devious endeavors. . get about 4 feet of extension and wobbly socket or socket and swivel attachment get at it from underneath. Drop crossmember and use jack to lower/angle assembly, might also loosen motor mount bolts but be sure your not going to drive the fan blade into the radiator.

Save the easist bolt for last. That way you don't have to deal with seperation issues while working a hard to get at bolt.

Be sure to unbolt the torque convertor from the flexplate before unbolting the transmission from the engine. The torque convertor stays with the transmission.

Agreed. "worst first" as my kids used to tell me at dinner time when they were young. Makes it a lot easier at the end.

Remove the drivelines
Disconnect the tranny lines
Pull the starter out
Pull the radiator out
Unbolt the torque converter
Pull out the cross member
Drop the back of the drivetrain down with a floor jack
Unbolt the transfer case shifter
Support the drivetrain on tranny jack
Unbolt the bell housing from the block
Wiggle it loose
Stay out of the way in case it flops

Thanks. I gave up on this a month ago but was in a 9 car pile up that totaled my F150. Now I need to get up and running so I have a vehicle. Was going to start serp setup but I will do that later.

I currently have all but one bolt out on 20 to adapter. Should I go another route and leave them connected and pull as one? I do have the harbor freight scissor jack.
