I'm trying to change out the rubber o rings on the shifter (it's leaking around them). Can someone tell me how to get to them? I can't the shifter loose. The large metal ring seems to be the sticking point but I'm not familiar, so better to ask. Lock ring or something?

I want to say you have to remove the nut inside the transmission pan.
It has been a long time since I was inside a C4 and might be confusing it with a different transmission.

I'll take a look, replacing the pan etc anyway.

The shifter arm is brazed on the shaft. You have to remove the shaft from the inside.

That's right. In order to get to the nut you have to remove the valve body also.

It’s also not an o ring, it’s a seal that must be removed and new one installed.
