I am looking to swap in a 96' Explorer 5.0 but would like opinions on whether to go carb or efi. I like the simplicity of carburetion but the reliability of efi. Has anyone out there ran a carb on an Explorer 5.0? I was planning to go with an Edelbrock 500cfm on a performer intake. Thanks.

It will run great and you will have good hp with the Explorer roller motors and gt40 heads if you put some good headers on it. I have a one wire hei distributor with the distributor gear for a factory ford roller cam like 96 explorers have that has the coil and control module built into the distributor cap I will sell you for $90. All you would need is run a key hot to it and your done.

A carb would work on any engine. They even make 4.6 carburetor intakes. I find them more reliable than EFI. It's a lot easier to fix if anything does go wrong. A well tuned carb would perform as well as the EFI. Just look at the '85 Mustang 5.0. The explorer has a little more cam and GT40 heads, but otherwise similar to the 5.0 Mustang.

Watch the distributor gear, you need it compatable with the roller cam or it will self destruct. Destroying both the distributor gear and the cam at the same time. Don't forget the metal shaving dropped into the engine as the two parts eat each other. So get it right the first time.

In my trail rig I'm running a '96 Explorer 5.0 w/GT40 heads and a propane set-up, which uses a 4v Holley base. Also an MSD ready to run distributor. It works great!

Let's not start another efi/carb debate. Both are good when running right. I have both and both run equally as good.

Again I used the 1985 Mustang example because the whole package was done for you in that case. Just use that distributor, carb, intake, and exhaust. It all bolts on and works together. My only change would be deleting the EGR. Ford made an aluminum carb spacer for 5.0 and 5.8 marine engines that does this.

I have a Not So Stock 77 with a 351w with the Ford EFI and had an Almost All Stock 69 with a 351w and an Autolite 4100. Both run very well.

Only real difference is the single pump of the accelerator for the carb when starting. When done right, both are very reliable.

My 76, that is being restored, with have the Autolite 4100 on top of it's 351w.

Bronncobowsher,
any recommendation on a distributor? I am a little unsure about TFI.
