What is the difference between the 70's dana 44 frt and the 85-89 dana 44? Can any parts from the 85-89 be used for a disc brake conversion? Can the inner axles from 85-89 be used?
I think the only real differance is the spindles take a larger inner bearing. So they cant be used for the swap unless you machine them down to the earlier size. otherwise a D44 is a D44 most parts will swap although the inner shafts or at least the long side will need to be cut down and respline to be able to use it.
The dana 44 has flat sides on the front cover like where the axle tubes come out of housing and also have 30 spline inner axles. The 10 bolt gm has a more rounded or egg shaped cover with 28 spline inner axles.
Chevy used the dana 44 on 1/2 tons and 3/4 tons in the 70's. 6 lug on 1/2 tons, 8 lug on 3/4 tons. Maybe an easy way to upgrade a FW dana 44 axle ford to 8 lug??
That is if you are decoding the VIN, the badge on the fender is different. For example, my 1970 3/4ton 4wheel drive, has a C20 Badge and a K in the VIN
