cold air intake off the heater vent in hood

So no they can not share the intake?

Correct they cannot share the hood intake. I cut my heater intake box off right at the fender so it still pulls in air from there. I can't remember the last time I ran my heater as it barely did anything anyway, so I can't speak to performance. I could see how one could modify the intake box to us both though if it were an issue.

Here are some photos. I was planning on making my own design when I ran across the BC Broncos box. I do get concerned with liquid carryover in heavy rain. I might make a few changes, maybe drill out the drain holes, add a baffle, or maybe even extend the length of the filter box and add some drain holes there. Too many holes and you’re just pulling the air from the engine bay.

My brain can't picture assembled with filter and installed. All you need for water protect is force the air stream 90 degrees in some direction. The water will not be able to make the turn (unless the box is FULL of water). You do it on the hood too - a small rear facing scoop covering the louvers would keep the vast majority of the water out then add a baffle coming into the filter to make any other water turn 90 degrees.
