I was replacing the top end of my column and when I pulled the shift lever housing the shift tube came with it.
1. Should that have happened?

when I reinstalled everything i cant shift. I have a lot of play and no shifting.

2. Is there a trick to reinstalling the tube?

I made sure shift arms where in the neutral position before installing the tube back down the shaft. The tube did not come all the way out the lower bearing still was attached.

Thanks

The tube is just a slip fit on both ends. There is a spot welded key on each end of the tube. These tend to break off. You should pull it back out and see if this has happened. There are replacement tubes available but I have successfully welded broken off keys on several columns.
