Continued fuel pressure issue

Recently installed an electric Carter fuel pump. It primes up great and engine fires up and BOOM, fuel pressure just leaves. Pump is running but fuel isn't getting to the carb. All new lines and tank (only the main tank is connected with no switch). Got a filter between tank and pump and a pressure gauge before carb. Thought it was maybe air but that wasn't it. Ideas?

Sounds like junk in the tank clogging the pickup. Turn it off, gunk falls off. Then you get flow on the next run, until it sucks full of crud again.
Should be clean. New tank that I cleaned before installing. But....its what I'm thinking too.

I was one who recently posed finding gasket sealant from the sender braking off and plugging the filler line. See my post.

I would first try to run it with no gas cap installed, just to make sure it isn't a venting issue.

Then sand down to bare metal a place on frame and run ground wire again - bad grounds do weird stuff.

Then I would disconnect from the gas line before it enters carb and have some run pump and fill into bottle to test flow.

Ok, so looks like my issue is the fuel filter. It's basically collapsing on me. What fuel filter are folks using before the electric pump?

Use a metal one. Plastic ones are for the pressure side if you must run plastic. I typically use big aeromotive or a local company that makes AN fittings and such. That’s probably not what you’re after though. Any metal filter will work just fine. I wouldn’t worry too much about micron size unless you have a choice.

If the fuel tank has a filter sock on the pickup (stock setup), that filter sock is all I use for a pump pre-filter. If the pickup is original, that sock has likely fallen off. Most aftermarket tanks don't have a sock, just an open 3/8" pickup at the bottom. Those should have a pump pre-filter in line. Just keeps big junk from going through the pump. I actually prefer the basic clear ones. Lets you see if they are loading up with garbage.
In a perfect world, I would be fitting a holley hydramat to the bottom of the fuel tank as the pickup and pre-filter.

I had a metal one on it but it was a cellulose filter material and it was contracting and shutting down the flow of fuel. I'm going to move to a stainless steel mesh instead of the cellulose.

More problems I guess...the new tank is a Tom's OEM type tank. Has the two vent lines that goes to the separator behind the driver seat. But, the line to the charcoal canister is broken, and the canister itself is not on the Bronco. So while I'm going through this whole fuel pressure issue, I assume this too could be a problem (venting).
Anybody want to buy a Bronco? LOL
SMH...

I've always used one like this and have had no issues.

I just use one of these. Easy to run mounted on the firewall.

And third for avoiding that one. well known problems waiting to happen.

I see mentioning of Tom's OE style tank. Does that mean OE style sending unit/pickup? Did you install the OE style strainer sock on the end of the pickup? If you did, that is all the prefilter you need.

I'll be honest, after pulling the fuel filter, it wasn't the pressure issue. It was "contracting" some but not blocking fuel. I'm back to junk in my tank, venting, a bad elect. pump or whatever anyone else can come up with. I've got the tank off and going to see what it looks like. No idea on the venting....just looking at that. I don't know...frustration is setting in at this point. Tools have been thrown and words flying now.

Problem mostly solved. It was the vent lines. Just got to figure out where to send the vapor line (to air filter or somewhere I guess).

Someone on here recently posted a DIY charcoal canister, sounds to me like what you may need. Did you have the vent blocked off? Someone way more knowledgeable than me will likely post a diagram, but it definitely needs to be vented correctly. My cousin had an EB and thought it would be OK to just remove the vapor canister (behind the drivers seat), and it caused his to keep popping the gas cap off. At least thats what he told me. He put it back in line and all was well.

Vent lines had broken and I couldn't get a good vacuum to maintain fuel pressure. I'll look up the charcoal canister. It's a '73, so I'll try to find a diagram. Chiltons has one but hard to read the faded pages. I guess I'm fairly lucky in the system is in tact minus the charcoal canister.

This may have been mentioned earlier, or you may have already tried it.
If you’re ever questioning whether vent lines, being closed is causing a problem with fuel delivery, just remove the gas cap and see if it cures the problem.
That’s the biggest vent you can create!
And as long as the tank isn’t overfilled, you shouldn’t have trouble with fuel coming out unless you corner really really hard.
If you’re just testing it in the driveway, shouldn’t have a problem.

That's how I found it. But I still haven't completely solved the puzzle. After fixing that issue yesterday, it was running pretty well. Today, not so much.....I've thrown up my hands and going to take it to someone more qualified and stop wasting time. I'd sell it if I hadn't grown up with it...lol.
