Cummins 6AT?

Hello,

This question isn't really techie, but it is Bronco related. I am looking at options for the next build up.

I have a crusty EB and really would like to try a diesel in it. It will be a crawler with the usual larger axles and tires etc. The Bronco is fixable, but pretty bad and I have other Broncos to make nice etc.

I am aware of, and own one of Cummins famous diesels, 4BT is out of budget, 2.8 is not what I am after despite the cost. I like fairly quiet, stick simple etc.

The 6AT is intriguing. I can find a lot of information on history, size and general stuff. It is pretty hard to find info on anyone who has actually driven one, or used one in a swap for MPG etc.

Anyone used one in a Bronco or other swap? Mainly curious about cold-starts, MPG power and under what conditions.

Thank you for your time!

Cool idea but 1100 pounds on a short wheel base truck might get interesting

My thoughts exactly. The bronco is just too small in my opinion. A good 351w is a great way to go. If money isn't a issue, heck go Coyote yeehaw. ;D

I figured when I said 6AT that was going to throw people off. The 6BT is the humongous 1100 lbs. one. Most Bronco guys know the 4BT. The 6AT is a totally different breed basically the same size as a 300-6 Ford.

They aren’t real popular and I’m aware of the history size weight all of that. I was just curious if anyone had installed one or was around one and what they thought of that particular engine.

They’re not real common, they’re not overly powerful but they tend to run about 25% of the cost of a 4BT.

Onan used them as a stationary power source in the 80s as I recall. And then Cummins apparently bought them and used them in some UPS repower projects and so forth I don’t think they were ever installed in a factory passenger vehicle.

They show up once in a while for about 1000 bucks plus or minus. They come with the GM bell housing on the back and often have power steering alternators all of that and they’re much quieter.

But… You’re talking horsepower around 125 and torque somewhere around 220 or 230. And they don’t respond modifications like the b series engines.

If you’re interested, I slid a Mercedes OM 617 3ltr turbo in my bronco and it fit nicely. Built my own bell housing and had a local fellow combine 1/2 Ford ,1/2 MercedEd torque converter. Been running it for 8 years trouble free. Although I need to ditch the 3.50 in the rear and go 4.11.
