D44 thick cut gears pros cons

Got my 4.11s in the 9" now looking at doing the 44. I have 3.50s in there now so would need carrier change or thick cut gears.

Any drawbacks to the thick cut gears to avoid the new carrier? It's an open diff and was going to leave it that way. If there are concerns, clearance issues, etc I would do a try trac in front.

Just did the true trac in the rear and tested it on a snowy hill i. 2whl dr and have to say I'm impressed.

The only cons I know are, they are offered in limited ratios and not offered in reverse spiral cut. I've been running one in my 44 for 6 years now. Open carrier with an Aussie lunch box inside. Running this with 35's, it's been great!

I usually suggest thick cut gears to folks who bring me their stuff for upgrades. On Dana axles the deeper the gear the less contact between the ring and pinion. Unfortunately it's not available in every ratio.

Pretty much as stated above. If you have a low series carrier that is worth keeping and you can get a ratio you want it can be a good choice.

If you decide to change the carrier later you may be limited in your options. I think a few of the lockers do not offer carriers in the higher series.

No negatives to the thick gears.
If you decide later that you want a TrueTrac in front the thick gears will work with the 3.73 down TrueTrac too.

I just did all this same stuff. 3.50 to thick 4.11 open front, installation, set up, and drive was nice and easy on all accounts. Probably had a lot to do with luck though.

I have the thick cut gears and Trutrac up front there are no issues with it at all. been running them for over 20 years now. Back then the thick cut gears were made by Dana and were a high quality gear set. I run 33" diameter tires. I would recommend them to anyone as long as they were not planning a move to tires over 33" later on.

They are quite a bit heavier, so more rotating mass with thick cut. Won't matter for slow stuff.

Best price I found on my thick 4.11's was Rock Auto. Under $150 shipped, but that was a few years ago.

Thanks guys going to pull the trigger next week on gears and install kit. Still trying to justify the true trac in front. The nicer I make the truck the more likely it is to stay on the street.....

The more you put into making it off road capable the harder to justify not driving it off road.

I'm running thick gears in the front. No issues, and it allowed me to use the posi I had on hand.

As far as the tru trac, I'd run one again. I am currently running a trac lok and it does pull a bit in the ice, I don't remember the TT doing that.
