I've been researching this all day and the only firm information I've found is that because of bronze parts, it can't have detergents or additives, and needs to be 50w, essentially a gl-1 mineral oil. The only mineral oil/non-detergent/no additive I can find between autozone/advanced/oreilly is 30w. Any strong reason of why I shouldn't use 30w?

Royal Purple Synthetic Gear Oil is detergent but non-corrosive to yellow metals.

That is what I run and have never had a problem.

Its really not a huge deal. lots of people have run gear oil lots have run the standard 50W SAE engine oil that ford recommened. Basically run what you like. Although if you live in colder climates you may want to consider the lower weight oils or at least synthetic. Ford actually recommened 30W for real cold climates.

Unless you make more than an auto oil engineer.?:?

You can certainly run motor oil or even ATF in them, but many people choose to use a synthetic gear oil because it last longer and resits breaking down. When the Bronco's where built, running motor oil in a T-Case was normal but that does not mean it is the best suited for the job. That being said, the Dana 20 is such a simple gear box that you can pretty much run anything you want in it, so long as it is thick enough to keep the friction and therefore heat down.

The main thing I would recommend is no matter what you choose run synthetic, it really is better oil. Also for you guys that are running detergent you really should swap it out for non-detergent, the detergent brittle's the yellow metal's in the T-Case, in the D20 that would be the two washers at the ends of the center gear shaft. Honestly with how the D20 is designed even if those two washer split due to hardening and corrosion. It probably would have little effect on the operation of the D20 it would probably just be noisy as hell. But it's best to not chance it, the detergent is not good for brass or bronze. The thing is, it takes a long time to erode it so you don't see the effect immediately.

It's considered a motor oil but I can't find any information if it's a "detergent" or "non detergent" oil.

Napa has 90w gl-1 gear oil. This means its additive/detergent free and safe for yellow metal. 90w gear oil is supposedly same thickness as the 50w motor oil that the manual states to use. Also, I've heard tractor supply carries gl-1 90w because old tractors have lots of yellow metal internals.

most motor oils do not contain sulpher. I think due to EPA regs. That is why the recommend it for old T-Cases it's easier than explaining what an owner can and cant use. General rule of thumb is all motor oil is yellow metal safe.

Valvoline Racing Oil -- not sure what is racing about it -- but thats the easiest SAE 50wt oil you can find out there.
