Guys,

Can someone please post up a diagram or photo of the linkage for a J shift Dana 20?

Keeps popping out of gear.

I think I missed something. There is a small hole in the bottom of the shifter that looks like it wants a spring.

Thanks

Your detent springs in the top of the transfer case are likely week. Vendors sell them for less than $10 and they are pretty easy to replace if your flexible. If you have a body lift they are easier. OR you can try stacking a few small washers in the holes, but frankly springs would be much easier...

Do they hook into the hole on the bottom of the J shifter that goes through rails?

No they are inside the transfer case. If you look at the top of a D20 where the shift rails come out, you'll see 2 1/2" bolts, if you take them out there is a spring and a ball inside. You replace or shim the spring. Replacing the springs is easier and likely cheaper unless you have the right sized washers on hand.

The last time I bought some, I want to say I ordered from JBG and they were like $5-7 for the kit, shipping was more expensive as usual...

Yes there is supposed to be a spring at the bottom of the stock J shifter.

It's been my experience the most common cause of the t-case popping out of gear is the pre-load on the rear output shaft is out of specification. I'd check that first.

Sooooo,

No spring on the bottom of the J shift, AND only the right hand 9/16 cap on the t case has a spring and ball. The left side is empty, nada, zilch.

Yet again my faith in my tranny/tcase rebuild is shot to shizznit.

I'm gonna order up some balls, springs, and a set of twin sticks.

You think I can swap the twin sticks in without dropping the tcase and tranny?

Depends on how big the hole you are willing to cut in the tunnel cover part of the floor is.

I'LL SAY YES I PUT my Twin J. B. sticks in with the trans & transfer case installed . I certainly didn't remove my TRANSFER CASE.
NOW I'M FOLLOWING THIS Post because My TRANSFER CASE ALSO jumps out of low range. I've been thinking mine just needs the linkage adjusted farther forward so it's completely forward . BUT MINE POPS OUT ABOUT EVERY 2 MINUTES for the last 3 years .... So yes go on your trip tomorrow .. If it pops, out put it back in place & drive it like you just STOLE IT.

There are 2 plugs on the driver's side. Only the rear has the spring and ball. If they were missing you wouldn't make it 100 ft without the front drive popping out. I recommend the adjustable detent plugs.

Needabronco mentioned a spring and ball in both, and the vendors sell them in pairs.

Viperwolf, are there more caps someplace else that needs another spring and ball? If not, what are these adjustable plugs and do the vendors sell them?

Thanks

1 Spring/ball on each side. Drivers side is front, pass side is rear.

There are 2 plugs on the driver's side within 1" of each other. The front plug has nothing under it.

I don't suppose anyone knows how long or how many pounds the spring is on the bottom of the j shifter?

Dropped 4 washers in the rear detent hole, hooked up a spring on the end of the j shift shaft. We'll see

There is another hole on the top side of the t-case. It also has a spring and ball in it. The top hole is for the right stick or rear drive and the bottom hole is for the left stick or front drive.

If it is popping out of low range (front and Rear), you have too much runout in the input gear, typicly worn bearing(s) on the input......
