Hi,

I am thinking that I can change the shift rail seals without disassembling the transfer case. Is this correct? I am thinking that all I have to do is:

1. Remove the detent springs and ball bearings

2. Turn the shafts a quarter turn

3. Simply slide the shift shafts out

4. Replace the seals

5. Slide the shafts back in once the new seals are in.... kinda like "presto change-o".

Is that just wishful thinking?

Regards,
Bruce

Iirc there are set screws in the forks that tighten them to the rails. And then when you put them back in, how do you plan on getting the forks lined up again? You have to pull the cover off to do anything.

If it's a T style D20 you might be able to change the seals by only disconnecting the shifter linkage. Drive a screw into the old seals to pull them out and use a piece of pipe to drive the new ones in.

If it's a J style D20 you have no choice but to take it all apart.
