Did I buy a 351 Windsor w/ my Bronco?

If it has 351 heads it only improves the flow not the cubic inches. Might be bored out too but I don't think that would gain you more than 12 cubic inches, not positive on the math.

A 351 is a completely different engine than a 302. Same engine family, but completely re-engineered from the 260/289/302 predecessors. Hence the different intake, distributor, push rods, etc.

You can build a 347 stroker out of a 302, but that wouldn't have been advertised as a 351. Ebay ad was a flat out lie.

Heck, when I bought my first Bronco, it was advertised as disc brakes, and I didn't know any better. Came with four wheel drums. Ad was an outright lie.

I just re-read the Ebay ad and it reads 351 V8. So it is not a Windsor but, can you convert a 302 into a 351?

Windsor is an engine family including many different engines for like 40 years, betcha a nickel it's a Windsor. Putting 351 heads on a 302 does not make it a 351, you cannot convert a 302 to a 351.

You have a 302 with yet to be identified heads.

If you're ever looking at one in the future and need to quickly ID it as a 351 or 302, take a peek at the area near the base of the distributor.
Until you're more familiar with the width difference, and if it does not have an easy identifier like the visible "289" in the intake, this is an easy method.

A 289/302 has the lower leading edge of the intake manifold (where it seals to the engine block) just about the same level as the base of the distributor. A 351W has it's seal surface almost an inch higher.
So if the front intake seal is noticeably higher than the base of the distributor, it's a 351. If it's roughly even with the base of the distributor, it's a smaller engine.

Yep someone probably put early 302 or 351W heads on a 302 block, I've done it as well. Those early 289-302-351w heads were high compression & gave it little more zip. I wouldn't be entirely dissatisfied

I've got a safety upgrade for you, throw that Mr. Gasket glass fuel filter in the trash and go buy a plastic generic see-through for a couple of bucks.

I've personally had one and have seen another start spraying fuel all over the place at the O-rings. Also, I don't know how tough that glass is but a glass cylinder full of gas banging around an engine bay off-roading? No thanks! Jus' my two cents, not a crack <no pun intended>

Yes! what Joe said.......

I donated my fire extinguisher to a guy in a Mustang one day, for just that reason.

I see you're in AL, where did you get the Bronco? Locally?
I got it from a town by Chattanooga called Hixson. It was listed on eBay. Search on Google 1972 ford bronco pepe and the listing still shows up on ebay and a few other sites.

Thats a nice looking Bronco! The reason I had asked is there was an untrustworthy ebayer selling Broncos down there.

As they said, you definitely don't have a 351 as advertised.

I removed a valve cover last night and these heads are stamped 302. Are these earlier 302 heads that would create a higher compression and what are some head packages should I upgrade to for improved performance?

Obviously it's not a 351w as advertised - so that's an issue only you can know if it matters or not - to you . I'm not sure of the extra actual cash value a 351 vs a 302 would add to the vehicle . Could be one of those 'what it's worth to you " things.
I guess it's possible the motor is a 347 stroker . The engine gurus should be able to tell you . I suppose if you pull a head you can measure the bore and stroke and also look for any custom headwork - ported , polished , bigger vales.
All that seems like a lot of work - are you happy with how it runs - or do you want more power?

Are you able to find a part number cast into the heads? This will tell you exactly what they are and what line they came from.

Ok, so I'm not gonna dispute the eBay transaction. I'm just gonna work with what I got. I have found a set of GT40 heads that I will check out T-giving weekend. They come with ARP head bolts, TFS pushrods, Scorpion 1.6 roller rockers and Ford Racing springs. Will these bolt up to my headers and intake manifold with no modification and no additional parts needed except for new gaskets? or if this is a bad idea please let me know.

Always afraid to say "bolt right on".

But that should be just that.

GT-40 Heads are fine and likely better than what you have. It sounds like they are well equipped.

If it were me I would have to run a hotter cam to take advantage of those heads, but that is just how I am....I can't leave shit alone....my tragic flaw....

Anyway.....make sure they are not GT-40 P-Heads. They flow good but require stock manifolds or specific, i.e...expensive headers.

Good looking truck ! Congrats and enjoy it ... Does it have front disc brakes ? I could not tell form the pics ... If the motor is running good I would leave it alone and put the money into a front disc brake kit.

Have you done a compression or leak down test yet? My only recommendation is to check overall engine health before throwing money at performance upgrades.

The preference is a leak down test (to determine if & what is wrong). Although if you have a compression gauge it can tell you if something *is* wrong.

Hey guys, these are the heads I will be looking at. How do they look in the pictures and what should I be looking for when I see them in person?

Are they GT 40 Or GT 40 P ? I think the are GT 40. I would send them to a head shop and have the gone through. In my area I have seen GT 40 heads range from 250-500.
I don't know much about them, I been looking into a set my self. If you do get them and install them keep me posted on header fittment
